Ärende: Re: Another whacko
==========================
Hey, FRANK.

FS>> They depicted Ronald Reagan as someone who was not only extremely
FS>> stupid but couldn't even stay awake at Cabinet meetings. The
FS>> fact that it was *he* who hammered the final nail in the Soviet's
FS>> coffin didn't change their attitudes.

EC>> I loved Peggy Noonan's story about that. Reagan "sleeping" while his
EC>> underlings fight it out. Then he sets the course.

FS> I hadn't heard that, but it certainly makes sense. Many years
FS> ago there was a clever Saturday Night Live skit depicting a
FS> Reagan cabinet meeting. Obviously it was intended to be *funny*
FS> (which it *was*). In this skit Reagan is shown conducting a
FS> cabinet meeting in the Oval Office. He's giving crisp orders
FS> right and left to the cabinet officials. A secretary enters
FS> telling him his appointment with a Girl Scout is due, that the
FS> Girl Scout is in the reception room. Reagan curses and tells his
FS> cabinet officers to leave *Right Now*! They leave quickly out
 FS> a side door.

FS> The Girl Scout enters: Reagan puts on a silly grin and starts
FS> talking like a semi-mental case. He poses for a photograph with
FS> the Girl Scout then scoots her out of the room -- all the while
FS> with a weak, silly smile on his fact.

FS> She leaves. Reagan goes to another door and tells his cabinet
FS> officers to get back in here! They scurry in. He *again* starts
FS> giving them crisp, complex orders regarding various problems.
FS> The phone rings. Reagan answers it -- starts talking rapidly
FS> in Arabic ... and so on.

FS> It was a very funny skit. What was *really* funny is that it
FS> probably was closer to the *actual* Reagan than the contrast ..d.

Heh heh heh

In one of Peggy's early books about life in the Regan administration, she
tells about attending a cabinet meeting. Reagan put his head down while his
underlings fought it out. He was seemingly asleep. And then he looked over
at Peggy and gave her a big wink. <g>

FS>> Dan Quayle who is an intelligent man they always portrayed as an
FS>> idiot ... largely because he couldn't spell "potato" ... or is it
FS>> "potatoe"? I'm not really sure. They *never* let up on him
FS>> forget the fact that a president needn't be a spelling champion.

EC>> But Dan was dead right about the message of Murphy Brown.

FS> Absolutely! The "news"media didn't seem to notice, though ...

Oh, they were horrified by Dan's lack of tolerance. <g>

FS>> Currently, of course, it's the "George W. Bush is a hopeless
 FS>> bungler." ... [sigh] ... it doesn't matter *what* he does, he's
FS>> stuck with that picture in the eyes of the "news"media ...

EC>> Of course GWB was just elected by the majority of American voters to
EC>> be the most powerful man in the world. <g>

FS> I guess even a hopeless, bungling simpleton can be right
FS> *occasionally* -- like the stopped clock ...

And his timing is just right. Every time there is an election year, the
Democrats get further behind.

Just lucky, I guess. <g>
