Ärende: Breaking News!
======================
Hello Frank,

>LL>Dropping atomic bombs saved no lives, given that Japan was ready
>LL>and willing to surrender weeks before.
>FS>Not so! see above ...
>LL>The reason for dropping two atomic bombs on Japanese cities had
>LL>nothing to do with ending the War in the Pacific. Japan had already
>LL>offered to surrender conditionally, weeks before the United States
>LL>nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
>FS>It had *everything* with ending that phase of the war!!
>LL>It kept the war from becoming a US/USSR confrontation.
>FS>Fortunately for the Russians -- *if* what you say is true, of
>FS>course.

>LL>I never lie.

FS>So those false statements you usually make are things you
FS>actually *believe*?? Amazing!

Just being a bit economical with the truth. ;)

>LL>So what was the reason? The United States wanted to send a message to
>LL>Russia. Truman called up Stalin on the hotline and told him, in no
>LL>unspecific terms, "We have atomic bombs, and are willing to use them.
>LL>This is what happened to two Japanese cities. The same will happen to
>LL>Russian cities if you try to invade northern Japan."
>FS>Truman told Stalin face-to-face at the conference they held in
>FS>Teheran(?) after the German surrender. Stalin already knew of
>FS>the bomb thanks to the traitor Oppenheimer who kept his commie
>FS>friends fully informed.
>LL>Some American generals did not want to stop with the a-bombing of
>LL>Hiroshima and Nagasaki, wanting to do away with Russian cities as
>LL>well. And had Truman listened to those generals, there would be no more
>LL>world today.
>FS>Patton, among others wanted to invade Russia.

>LL>Patton wanted the Nazis to invade Russia.

FS>Not so. Patton was quoted as saying he was willing to drive to
FS>Berlin, *through* Berlin and all the way to Moscow. We didn't
FS>like that kind of talk since we wanted to get *out* of the
FS>military and return home.

Patton's idea was to drive the Nazis all the way to Moscow, where
Stalin would finish them off. But Stalin was more interested in
defending Stalingrad rather than Moscow. So Patton had to find a
different way to defeat them Nazis.

>FS>That might have been a good idea except for the fact that it would
>FS>have kept me in uniform -- not a good thing at all ... [sigh] ... I
>FS>had had enough of the military life and wanted out ...

>LL>Once the Nazis succeeded in invading Russia, America would then
>LL>overthrow the Nazis. At least, that was Patton's plan.

FS>Not so ... see above ...

Like I said, Stalin was not a very good team player.

>LL>When Truman talked, Stalin listened.

>FS>Yeah ...

>LL>By George, I think you've got it!

>FS>I *always* have ... [sigh] ...

>LL>Yeah. But sometimes I have to remind you. :)

FS>Now if I could only get *rid* of it ... [sigh] ...

Slap! Slap! You supposed to say, "Thanks! I needed that!"

>LL>We had the a-bomb, the Russians did not.
>LL>Stalin knew it, and knew we would use those
>LL>a-bombs. And not just on Japanese cities.

>FS>And we had the delivery systems ...

>LL>Good ol' B-52 bombers. Made in the U.S. of A.

FS>Not during WWII ...

Just ask Billy Pilgrim. He knows all about American bombers.

>LL>Militarily, Japan was already
>LL>soundly defeated. Dropping atomic bombs on Japanese cities gave us no
>LL>advantage, and only served to antagonize the Japanese people, as well
>LL>as the world.
>FS>What it *did* do was to finally galvanize the Jap Emperor to
>FS>*quit*.
>LL>Emperor Hirohito was ready to throw in the towel months before.
>LL>Heck, he never liked the idea of war with America in the first place.
>FS>How do you know that??
>LL>Hirohito told me so.

>FS>You shouldn't have paid so much attention to him ...

>LL>Hirohito was a god. And when a god talks, people listen.

FS>Are you a Shintoist?

Nope. Lost the faith when Hirohito denounced his godhood.

>FS> ... [snip] ...

>LL>As a nation, we should be ashamed of ourselves for having nuked two
>LL>Japanese cities, thus ending the lives of over a hundred thousand
>LL>innocent civilians.
>FS>Actually "Hiroshima Day" should be a day of *national*
>FS>*celebration* in the USA!!!!
>LL>Americans do not celebrate the annihilation of life, but rather the
>LL>continuation of life. That is why Americans cheered the end of the
>LL>war, with our troops coming home. Women finally got to be with their
>LL>men, and made plenty babies as a result. "Make love, not war" became
>LL>the new battlecry for Americans everywhere...
>FS>"Hiroshima Day" would be in celebration of the mammoth saving of
>FS>lives thanks to the dropping of the atomic bomb!
>LL>Americans do not celebrate death. Nor do Americans want to celebrate
>LL>death. Americans are about life. And celebrating life. Not death.

>FS>But, Lee, "Hiroshima Day" would be the celebration of LIFE! Of
>FS>lives saved by dropping two bombs!

>LL>We celebrate victory day, not bombing day.

FS>Right and "Hiroshima Day" would *be* VICTORY DAY!

Actually, V-Day *is* celebrated. Every year.
It is a celebration of life, of our soldiers coming
home, with the war being over.
