The reality is the American people want to keep their social insurance
program, rather than gut it or end it.

Social security was created by FDR and his Democratic-controlled
Congress.  Medicare was created by LBJ and his Democratic-controlled
Congress.  I'd say that qualifies as being the Democrats' baby.  ;)

The Democrats want social security to be everybody's program.  Not just
a program for the rich, or the poor.  Rather, a program for everybody.

Bush's private investment scheme is not a very good investment for
anybody.  Except maybe Wall Street brokers.

Without a social insurance program, this country would go down the
drain.  The program we have set up is very modest.  In comparison with
Europe, which on average folks pay about 22%, Americans pay only 12.4%.
Of course, Europeans get free medical care from cradle to grave.  And
also longer vacations.  And an earlier retirement (Italians retire at
age 57).  But who needs all that when one can work till you drop?
