Ärende: Huh?
============
...

TR>> They have already forced us to have many of our rights scaled back
TR>> greatly, and seriously hurt our economy.

IOW, you are saying, the terrorists are winning.

Though they have really done little damage to the economy.

DC>>> But, the conditions were ripe for such abuses. Undertrained
DC>>> troops were thrown into unfamiliar situations. US troops
DC>>> are fighting a guerilla war in a country where they are
 DC>>> unwanted interlopers.

TR>> You're talkin' through yer hat, here! You take a person who's a
TR>> civilian, put them through Boot Camp.....teach them all manner of ways
TR>> to kill people, hurt people, fight against people who are trying to kill
TR>> them...put them in a war, and suddenly.......you're absolutely surprised
TR>> that they kill people! Hurt people! And even more surprised when
TR>> sometimes.....they abuse people in their custody!

Those committing the abuses at Abu Ghraib were largely
reservists, already experienced. At least one was a prison guard
in his civilian life. That was not their training, it was lack
of training for the job they were doing.

And I was just reading something about that England woman. I
still am not convinced she was guilty as charged. She did some
wrong, but I don't believe she was a rogue soldier enjoying her
sadism. I do believe she was doing what she was supposed to do,
under direction of either higher command or civilian
interrogators given authority over the interrogations.

DC>>> The tragedies of the Viet Nam era are being repeated.

TR>> Oh get real! Probably one of the stupidest things about this entire
TR>> discussion, over all echoes it takes place, is that stupid-assed *just
 TR>> like Vietnam* macro.

It is just like Vietnam. Only not in Iraq, so much, as in
 Washington. Rumsfeld is McNamara revisited.

JM> The debate in the House last week was to draw out the
JM> Democrats...to get them on record saying that they don't
JM> support the war in Iraq and that they want to cut and run.

What they really feel is one thing, what they publiclly support
is a phased withdrawal over a year's time, more or less.

And if the truth were known I'd bet a whole lotta republicans
share their beliefs, both their public beliefs and their private
 ones.

The biggest cheerleaders for this war are the republicans who
 never served.

JM> Because ultimately...if you don't support the current
JM> mission, that's really the only position you can take. And
JM> with things going pretty well these days...cutting and
JM> running isn't something the American people would support.

Only the majority of them. Most Americans do not believe things
are going well. A majority of the troops say we should pull out
 within a year.

OTOH, if things are going so well, why does Bush think the
withdrawal will be the decision of the next president?

JM> Nancy Pelosi said, "This is a war that is a grotesque
JM> mistake." I'm sure all of the troops serving in Iraq from
JM> Pelosi's district are pleased to know she thinks they're
JM> there fighting for a "grotesque mistake." So what's her

The knew it long before she said it.

JM> answer? She doesn't have one; all she says is that it's
JM> time for a new strategy, according to her "one that will
JM> make us safer, strengthen our military, and restore our
JM> reputation in the world." In other words, like most
JM> Democrats, she has no plan.

Stay the course is no plan, it's an advertising slogan. The
proper plan to make us safer, strengthen our military, and
restore our reputation in the world starts by getting our forces
out of Iraq. The world sees us as mired in Iraq, with little
remaining force to act anywhere else.

JM> Last weeks debate served its purpose. It showed that
JM> Democrats have no real ideas of their own ... except to run
 JM> and hide.

Run and hide is what most of the republican leadership did when
it was their time to serve. That's why we call them
 "Chickenhawks".

Anyone who thinks it a great idea to have other people stay in
Iraq had better have a real good explanation.
