 True, but you don't have to be able to perform at the
 professional level to know enough to teach most science. Esp at
 the lower levels of science instruction.

 OTOH, your comment is quite relevant. And it leads to the
 further expansion, that I believe the attitude that a teacher
 can teach anything is not an isolated development. The current
 philosophy in management is that a manager can manage anything.
 IOW, the problem doesn't start or end with teachers. It is a
 systemic failure.

 I have encountered the business side of that, and only hope I
 can hang on until social security before the company goes under.

 Depends on what you mean. Which items. Gym class and music and
 art and driver's training etc were all considered very much part
 of a public school education when I was in school. It was always
 considered the duty of the school to turn out an educated
 citizen, not just a graduate.
