  Media Day 2004 cancelled

Lack of staff within mass communications cited as reason for
    dropping event this year

      By: Jeremy King

        Posted: 1/28/04

For years, Media Day at the State University of West Georgia
gave mass communications students a chance to interact with
industry professionals and get a taste of what life would be
like in the workplace after they graduated. In 2002 and 2003,
Media Day expanded to recognize prospective students as area
newspaper writers and editors critiqued high school newspapers
 in the Better Newspaper Competition.

This year, however, students won't get that day of interaction.

"This year, there will be no Media Day," said Amanda Lee,
editor in chief of The West Georgian.

According to Lee, the mass communications department chair put
off any decision on Media Day until after one e-mail from a
high school arrived asking how to enter the competition.

"At that point, McCandless responded to my e-mail and said that
Media Day was cancelled," she said.

Brad Yates, mass communications professor, said that the
department was simply spread too thinly to make the event
happen. Several mass communications professors left UWG last
year, and the resulting hunt for new staff members took priority
 over planning the event.

Media day has been a tradition at UWG for many years, One
professor, Glenn Novak, former chair of the Department of Mass
Communications, has taught at UWG since 1984 and shared his
 experiences with Media Day.

"Media Day was started by Shirley Alexander, a professor who
specialized in print and broadcast journalism," Novak said.
"When I worked on Media Day in 1985, the event was still in its
 early years."

Novak emphasized the event's importance in creating visibility
on campus for the fledgling mass communications program.

"Back then, mass communications was still grouped under fine
arts. A music professor was our chairperson," Novak said.

Novak spoke highly of the format of Media Day both as created by
Alexander and as modified by Marie Hardin, former print media
 professor at UWG.

"Hardin changed the format to make Media Day a recruiting tool
that reached high school students," Novak said. He praised that
change calling it "innovative," and "an excellent move."

The combination of the philosophy, mass communications has drawn
 criticism on campus.

"I know that the department is now in flux with a new chair and
budget cuts." he said. "I hope [Media Day] doesn't have to end."

Stan Hardegree echoed the words of other UWG mass communications
students, alumni and staff members when he criticized the
combining of departments rather than hiring new departmental
 chairs.

"Aside from the application of ethics, the disciplines of
philosophy and journalism do not overlap."

Hardegree is publisher of the Villa Rica Voice, a weekly
newspaper in nearby Villa Rica. He is a West Georgia Alumnus and
participated in Media Day's Better Newspaper Contest as a judge.

 1992-1998
