Over the period of a couple of decades beginning in the 1960s, the Altamont
Pass area in the East (San Francisco) Bay region sprouted dozens if not
hundreds of windmill generators.  That particular pass has reliable winds
almost all the time.  Within the past decade or so envirowhackos have been
demanding that the windmills be taken down because they're a hazard of some
sort to what little wildlife remains in that megalopolis (Fairfield to south of
San Jose - about 90 miles - is one almost solid development from the coast
to the middle of the Central Valley (Stockton area, some people actually
commute
from Stockton to San Francisco, well over 100 miles each way; when I was a kid
in Oakland going to visit relatives in Stockton - or even Walnut Creek - was an
all-day trip).

Dams are being dismantled in this country.  I believe one in New England,
that had been in place well over a century, was torn out over the objections
of the dam's owner - who also owned the land around it.  Another one
in Washington was also torn down recently.  Some enviros want the
Bonneville and Grand Coulee dams on the Columbia River torn out along with
the dams on the Mississippi.
