Well.........there were Union soldiers all over the place, Confederate
soldiers were being held in various camps, unarmed, the fighting had stopped,
cannon fire had ceased.....


Gee.........I don't think it would have taken a rocket scientist to figure
out something unusual was going on and ask somebody what was happening, do
you?


Let me point some things out to you, Danny:


By the 1870' blacks were voting.


Most of the Constitutional and legislative ammendments involving
Reconstruction took place between 1865 to 1871.


Republican legislatures, and coalitions of whites and blacks had established
the first public school systems in the South.


Starting in 1874 various white paramilitary groups, like the `White League,
and Red Shirts', began operating to turn republicans out of office, terrorize
blacks, and frighten them away from poling places.

From about 1873 to 1877, democrats regained office in state elections
thoughout the former Confederacy. Presidnt Hayes withdrew federal troops, and
the remaining republican states went democrat as a result.


The democrat governors and legislatures then enacted and signed into law,
constitutions and statutes that disfranchized most blacks and thousands of
poor white from the voting rolls.


White democrats established a one party rule, and enforced a system of racial
segregation throughout the South that held right into the 1960's!


And......throughout all this turmoil and violence....you are trying to
pretend that blacks who couldn't read didn't know slavery had ended?


You know......this is really ridiculous. This bullshit thread started out by
me saying slavery hadn't existed in America in well over a hundred years.


You came up with some urban legend that had slaves as late as 1902.


You went from there to some waffle about the `well over' notion... to `how
many blacks were able to read' at the end of the war....and you are now at
the `how many were able to roam between plantations' position.


You are like a character in a cartoon who went over a steep cliff, and is
desperately grabbing at small branches sticking out from the cliff face on
the way down, only to have them break off under their weight, fall a little
further, grasp desperately at a small ledge of rock, only to have that
dislodge under their weight, they fall even further.....until finally, they
are reduced to trying to dig their fingernails into the rock face, leaving
long claw marks in their wake as they gather speed and plunge toward the
ground!


This is one of your silliest.
