============================
Hi Bob,

Bob Klahn wrote in a message to Richard Webb:

True enough, but then you've got to document this. THe question isn't so much
as did they as would there have been a possible opportunity to taint the
evidence. Chain of custody removes *any* and all doubt. CHain of custody has
broken quite a few prosecutions last few years iirc.

true, somewhat different, most known criminals would *not* be carrying a
registerd firearm, and you can be sure the throwaway the cop is carrying for
just this purpose ain't registered anywhere either <g>.

BK>> Yep, and the only real problem is, the dog and if you show the

RW> DOg will be well behaved, gun stays in the closet. Even if
RW> I don't ask for the warant if I"M home alone I"m going to
RW> request your badge number and phone your agency to make
RW> sure you're who you say you are. OF course a lot depends on
RW> the situation. THen when I find out mr. officer is legit I
RW> might step out on the porch and talk to him/her.
<snippage>

RW> NOT hardly, just a man who will protect myself when the
RW> stuff comes down. I"ll be more than glad to assist my
RW> neighbors but I'm not going to have the looting and other
RW> weirdness that might come to pass after the earthquake or
RW> big storm coming to me.

BK> That's when you are less likely to have problems. They are more
BK> likely to come to help you.

MOst of my neighbors in this area know I'd be their contact with those who
could bring help to *them* after the big one.
PRoblem with that is, I'm more than glad to bring that help, wehther it be
first aid for someone, or relay a message via radio that a man's trapped in a
colapsed building. WIll even share resources I have such as stored food and
water with my neighbors, but "share" is the operative word here.

BK> That won't be for an earth quake or storm. That will be
BK> doomsday.
YOu might be right, but just in case I survive it, I"m prepared.

BK>> However, this raises the question, why would you require a
BK>> warrant? Think about it.

RW> Alright, to be honest, once in awhile on a rare occasion
RW> I've been known to put something else in my pipe. IF you

BK> Ok, that part makes sense.
IN a past life, but you never know. Besides, as stated by Bob A. IT's my
constitutional right.

Btw understand your point about the census in your reply to Bo A as well.
still they ask too many questions that are none of their business. I have a
deep level of distrust of those who would use the data collected from or about
me. IN fact, as you've probably gathered, I have a rather deep level of
distrust.

<snippage>

RW> officer, I"ll phone the station. IF your badge number and
RW> name check out, come on in, I"ll even offer you a cold soda
RW> or a cup of coffee. IF your attitude is arrogant or
RW> somewhat hostile toward me however I might step out on the
RW> porch and answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

BK> You are raising issues not part of the question. Think of it this
BK> way. If the police have reason to believe a killer is still in the
BK> neighborhood they may want to come into your house to look for him.
BK> He could be there without your knowledge. Or you could be lying to
BK> the police because he threatened your family. Or because he is part
BK> of your family.

CHances are if he were hiding in my house I'd know it. SEe reference to gun
collecttion and ROttweiler.

BK> In an emergency they may be a bit brusque because they have little
BK> time and a lot to do and lives at stake.

True enough, and usually I"ll have observed the goings-on enough to understand
this. YEs I"ll accompany said officer as we open the back on my box truck,
with my keys, to show him/her there's nobody in the mobile control room.
Chances are good it will be readily apparent to me by the time officer shows up
that conditions aren't quite normal in my neighborhood <grin>. YET even then,
brusque I can handle, disrespect is another thing altogether. IF I"m working
avessel in trouble on 14300 khz and providing the vital link for the skipper
with the coasties and you come on and ask if the frequency is in use chances
are I'm going to be rather abrupt with you, but I"m sitll not going to forget
to tell you thank you for asking.

RW> IT's my home, and I have a right to that. YOu want inside
RW> MR. officer, even to just ask if we witnessed the
RW> activities earlier that day, you'll treat me with courtesy
RW> and respect, and allow me to verify your information via
RW> the telephone, or you *won't* come in. THe fourth amendment

BK> Which is not unreasonable, and likely excessive on your part. I
BK> have not known the police to be unreasonable when I dealt with
BK> them.
You haven't lived in inner city NEw ORleans then <grin>. THese guys take rude
and gestapo tactics to a whole new level just to find a homeboy with a dime bag
of crack in his pocket. IF you reclal, my wife and I managed five apartment
buildings in inner city NEw ORleans. I think they give classes in how to be
rude to citizens as part of training down there.

Believe it or not, I have some friends that are officers of the law, and
they're welcome in my home any time they come here. THere are a couple of cops
locally I know from my work with the local emergency operations center. ONe of
them knocks on the door chances are good we're not going to have to go through
the bit with the verification of the badge number etc. because I know who he
is.

Regards,
           Richard
