IN many ways a more effective means of learning a trade than others currently

True enough, but there again, masters teach apprentices, etc.  Far more
effective imho.

True, but a lot of these six month wonders walk out of these schools knowing
how to play with the high tech toys but not how to use the tools they'll find
in the real world.

BK>  That's where having family in the business helps. Give her some

YEp, in fact I suggested to her that if she couldn't find a gig on the west
coast she should offer herself as an intern at NPR. wORking with their tape
editors for the news programs would teach her about editing and splicing analog
tape on the fly. We also had a nice conversation about gain staging between
components of a signal chain.  WHen she went home from the funeral of a family
member she had a better appreciation of what she was learning in class, as she
told me via email.
