I'm known to buy a lot of cd-r blanks at times, but I"m in
audio production. THat doesn't mean ripping mp3 files of
artists either <g>.

RC> He proceeded to tell me he makes the bootleg copies for the less
RC> fortunate and proceeded to proclaim that Christian Bale, Denzel

A lot of these folks forget there are a lot of flesh and
blood people get hurt by this sort of "theft" as well.
People like me, not in my role as writer, but on the
production side. Artists don't use my services, or those of people like me, if
they're not making money.

What really amazes me is the folks I talk with who bootleg
all this music and it isn't mainstream stuff. I ask them if they realize that
those little independent labels that
produce the sort of music they like is hurt far worse than
the big guns by their actions. That small shoestring record label releasing
that techno or house msuic is going to be
harmed far worse than Sony BMG ever will be by their actions. In fact, so much
so that it might go out of business,
depriving these "fans" of a source of the content they love.

IF the artist doesn't make money, I don't get hired the next time. HE'll just
hang a multi-track deck off the sound
boardand record shows. HE might not go to a studio at all,
or avail himself of a professional mastering engineer next
time, because the money wasn't good enough from his last
project. I don't make money, I don't spend money. I don't
buy a new microphone, or take that vacation trip, or even
buy the cuts of meat I'd like to put on my dinner table. I
spend the afternoon changing my oil in the backyard instead
of going to a lube place, and worry afterword how to dispose of the used motor
oil. IT truly does "trickle down" and
these folks don't realize it.

HE's not stealing from Denzel washington, this one or that
one. HE's stealing from the grips who hauled the material
to make the film, the tech folks who made that Batman flick
possible. SUre they don't get royalties from every dvd
sale, but if the producers make their money as they should
they might hire that extra boom operator the sound guy
really should have to capture the audio correctly, or a
couple more grips so that the sound guy doesn't have to lug
his own gear up two flights of stairs to shoot that scene in the apartment
building.

BOotlegging costs everybody. Even if you think it doesn't
cost you you're wrong. IT costs you in higher prices,
shortchanged quality, all sorts of ways.

Regards,
           Richard
