Hi BOb,

On Sat 2036-Aug-23 14:39, Bob Klahn (1:124/311) wrote to Richard Webb:

Been too busy for echomail over the weekend getting house

I found that one a bit hard to swallow myself <g>.

<snip again>

RW> True, and I"m not totally insensitive to such issues. FOr

BK> AAMOF, that would not be at all out of character. I have leaned of

YEs, but when most I know of do discuss such situations
they're usually not so poised and altogether together if you catch my drift.
even otherwise articulate people when
discussing such experiences know they need to talk about it
for whatever reason but are not really happy about doing so. IT didn't ring
true with me.

BK> She waited to the last minute most likely because she hoped
BK> Thomas' lack of credentials would be enough to keep him from being
BK> conirmed. She probably didn't want to talk at all, but realized she
BK> had to or he would get in without it ever coming out.

SHe didn't carry herself or present herself in a way which
would ring true as a "victim" of unwanted sexual advances,
etc. to me. been over a decade since those hearings, but
that was my perception when listening to her.

BK>> She passed a polygraph, Thomas refused to take one.

RW> Any practiced liar can control the indicators enough to
RW> pass a polygraph. THis is one reason that polygraph
 RW> evidence is so controversial.

BK> Practiced is the key word. Neither one of them was trained to
BK> evade a polygraph, and could be tested without giving them time to
BK> get practice.

YOU can become a well practiced liar without training. sElf training will do
it. The same "tells" that will cause you
to fail the polygraph can trip you up just in observation as they result in
secondary signs. SOme people learn to lie
convincingly young.

 RW> A fellow I"d do some
RW> contract work for occasionally back in the '70's was a
RW> polygraph operator in his day job. HE always told me that
RW> a pathological liar can pass those things with flying
 RW> colors.

BK> Yet the polygraph is still used. And still relied on. That is
BK> probably because getting away with it is not all that easy.

NOt all that easy, but nevertheless doable.

RW> OToh he told me that a person, even though telling
RW> the truth who was off balance and nervous would fail.

BK> If the operator was not aware enough to realize the subject was
BK> nervous. More likely it would be inconclusive.
HE would agree with that, but then again this man was quite
well respected in his field.

RW>> Part I found i respect about the man is that his maternal
RW>> grandparents, who raised him expected and got a day's work
RW>> out of him as well as his schoolwork. THe man didn't have
 RW>> an easy childhood.

BK>> How many black people growing up back then did?

RW> A good number of course.

BK> A good number had an easy childhood?

Oops, pre-coffee, quite the opposite in fact. I should know better than to
compose echomail pre-coffee <g>.
RW> Had he truly been willing to stick with his anti
RW> affirmative action principles I could have understood that.

BK> OTOH, you would probably have never known his name then.

Probably so <G>. Just didn't like how the whole thing was
done. Give the man a pass on some difficult questions of
law and then bring on the @***@ sideshow.

Regards,
           Richard
