Ärende: What's in... 4.
========================
You asked for it! This is the last installment of a previous series... ;-)

AH> You can see below the surface without much prodding,
AH> and it didn't take much to get me into a kayak. Now
AH> I'm rediscovering an aspect of myself which I'd been
AH> neglecting for some time. ;-)

JB> See, just when I think I know what you are talking
JB> about... <ROTF>

Okay, try this. You arrived at the scene of an accident or whatever
& sensed there could be more to the situation than what had first met your eye,
in much the same way that 90% of an iceberg is below the surface of the water.
The intuition component of your reasoning style is what enables you to see
below the surface... and the perception component is what enables you to
reserve judgement until you've collected a fair amount of data. You can & do
make snap judgements if the situation calls for quick thinking but don't
necessarily stop there. You may also enjoy open-ended questions where others
seem to want immediate answers.

In many ways, you sound to me like a person who prefers using his
body to using his brain... i.e. the "sensation" component is stronger than
mine. But you do a lot of good thinking too, even when you sound more like the
drummer who flies by the seat of his pants than the clarinet player with a
dictionary in her purse. I got the latter imagery from a Hoffnung cartoon. I
must admit, though, that I really did carry a dictionary in my purse for
awhile! I was in a concert band where I sat next to a guy who drove me crazy
because he ignored all foreign terminology such as "staccato" and refused to
accept my interpretation.... :-))

I think Hoffnung was onto something. In my experience people often
do select a particular instrument because there's something about it, and about
the type of music generally associated with it, which resonates with their
preferred reasoning style. Here are two caricatures of my own, using this
theory:

 Sensation/Perception
 --------------------
-- these are the people about whom it is said "S/he lived life to the
fullest" or "S/he likes anything which goes fast, smells bad and/or
makes a lot of noise". (I put the first example in the past tense
because I hear it most often after one of them has been buried in an
avalanche while skiing in an out-of-bounds area.) They themselves
say they enjoy the "adrenaline rush" when they take physical risks.

-- learns by doing, doesn't plan ahead or rehearse

-- chooses the trumpet in grade eight because s/he thinks it has only
three notes, or the drums because s/he is hoping to avoid learning to
read music, or the saxophone because it's easier than the clarinet...
or so s/he says. But these instruments can also make a lot of noise!

-- usually prefers rock music, with the bass amplified, but may also
enjoy American-style marches (fast & loud) and/or jazz (improvisation)

 Sensation/Judgement
 -------------------
-- these are the people who, as teenagers, feel uncomfortable when the
English teacher wants them to think & ask for some boxes to fill in.
They like team sports with rules and/or "working out" on a schedule.

-- learns by rote memory, likes predictability & structure

-- favours instruments which haven't changed much during the past few
centuries and/or which conform to somebody else's opinion as to what
is suitable (e.g. violin, bagpipes, Conservatory piano, or some other
option deemed by the current whim of fashion to be gender-appropriate)

-- usually prefers music which has been around for quite some time so
s/he can copy the way others have done it before. Glares at Dallas &
me for laughing during a PDQ Bach concert, then leaves in disgust at
the intermission after finally realizing the whole thing is a put-on.

Since the "intuitive" reasoning styles involve another level of complexity,
I'll leave them for later. Suffice it to say that, notwithstanding certain
remarks I made about drummers, I think those who are really good at it have an
"intuitive" component to their thinking. You alluded to this when you remarked
that some of the drummers you've known lack sensitivity in regard to their
instruments and/or to the volume which suits the music they're playing. In
order to be really good at it one also needs mental flexibility, and that's
where the "perception" comes in. You need it when the score calls for some
piece of equipment you don't have available & you must find a plausible
substitute immediately if not sooner. The right answer in such situations is
whatever achieves the desired effect.... :-)

JB> Have I called you a challenging corespondent? ...Lately?

Thanks... I love you too. :-)))
