Ärende: Second Thoughts... 3B.
===============================
On or about: 06-23-06 11:20, Ardith Hinton did engage James Bradley rgarding,
but not limited
to: Second Thoughts... 3B.

Trust me, to wait until I post to an English teacher, before I proof my header.

JB> place for a woman in a shop is on a calender on the wall.

AH> Well put! You do have a nice way with words... [chuckle].

Thank you. I do what I can. <-;

AH> I notice that our mechanic, for example, has girlie calendars
AH> in his shop. He didn't go out & buy them, though. Like
AH> me, he probably uses whatever cost him nothing as long as
AH> he doesn't find the art work objectionable. The suppliers

As I recall it, there is a real hierarchy to calendars in the auto biz. I think
it was a Ferrari
published, exclusive work as the pinnacle, and then it filters through the
other manufacturers,
until the lowest on the totem pole uses a Fram calender. Come to think about
it, I don't recall
seeing one at my mechanics shop. I'm sure I just didn't look too hard, but he
doesn't have a wall
full of Sunshine girls either.

AH> of car parts etc. may think the average mechanic enjoys, or
AH> is at least willing to tolerate, such calendars... and they
AH> may be right. But when Dallas checked out calendars as a
AH> way of advertising a computer consulting business, he found
AH> very few which did not portray semi-nude women. Since his
AH> clients include a variety of people
AH> ... about half of whom are female... he decided to focus on
 AH> other options. :-)

I wonder how popular a "Smokin' Pole" firefighters callander would be in a
shop? <G+D>

Last I heard, 80% of the online communication community was male. (Or something
close to
that.) If he ever returns to the notion, maybe he can cater to sexual
preference. <R f/Cover>

AH> Uh-huh. So while I dislike reinforcing the
AH> stereotype, it is easier sometimes than battling illusions
 AH> which I probably can't change anyway.... :-)

"Can't change" or "Won't change"? Isn't there still a discrepancy in wages?

AH> Good point! I'll ask the first female ambulance driver I

Gees, in my hospital career, I've only small-talked a few. I should have
engaged them in their
experiences as a designated driver. <G>

AH> meet... if I ever actually meet one. I know or know of a number of
AH> female rally drivers & race car drivers & taxi drivers, but
AH> no female ambulance drivers. Hmm.... :-)

I don't know, but I seem to see a few here. I actually check the drivers out to
see if I find some
eye-candy behind the wheel. Often, the female rides shotgun however.

JB> perceive others like they do.

 AH> Exactly. I may seem rather hard on SJ's & SP's
AH> at times, but that's because I'm looking from the
AH> outside... and very few of them can explain how it feels
AH> from the inside! Human beings tend to respond more kindly
AH> to other human beings who have had similar experiences
 AH> and/or who think in a similar way. :-)

D'ya think? <ROTF>

AH> So if an SP thinks the sign saying "DANGER -- KEEP
AH> OUT!" is irrelevant, I can understand that.... :-)

JB> Because they are more apt to look for proof?

AH> In some cases SP's may be, but I think it's more that they
AH> prefer to live in the moment & operate on impulse. I'm reminded
AH> of a situation years ago in which I intended to discuss
AH> what Huck Finn said about how moss usually grows on the
AH> north side of trees with a grade ten class. The lesson
AH> ground to a halt when one of my students insisted moss
AH> *always* grows on the north side of trees because his Daddy
AH> said so. I read the same story when I was a kid, and
AH> checked this theory at the first opportunity. IMHO moss
AH> tends to grow in a shaded spot
AH> ... which may (or may not) be on the north. In just two blocks,
AH> between here & Nora's old elementary school, I could easily show you
AH> two dozen trees with moss growing only on the south. In the
AH> woods where we go camping there are hundreds of trees with
AH> moss on all sides. Huck lived thousands of miles from
AH> here. And Huck was able to make a distinction between
AH> "always" and "usually" on the basis of his own experience,
AH> where my student & his father apparently weren't. Now I
AH> understand better where these people are coming from. If
AH> some Authority Figure (even a fictitious character) makes
AH> an easily memorized assertion, it must be a universal
AH> truth... and there is nothing of much importance between
AH> "always" and "never". That's SJ. I wouldn't count on them
AH> if I were lost in the woods! An SP might be more motivated
AH> by the prospect of experiencing a new sensation, and more
AH> confident of their own ability to improvise solutions to
AH> whatever problems they encounter. I suspect NT's are more
AH> interested in playing with new ideas & more likely than
AH> either SJ's or SP's to gather input from various sources.
 AH> :-)

I need to review, but my mess seemed to swallow my notes. "N" = intuitive, and
"T" = tactile?

I'll admit, this stuff was starting to make sense, but I've glossed over most
of it by now. A
specialist gave me her blessing, to lift heavy objects. I guess I was blessed
too much, as I over did
it at least twice, and you know what that does to my recollection

I've just finished a book about floor coverings, bought a bunch of old
server-type computers,
been trying to make sense of Linux... ... ... Like I've harped on, my capacity
for memorization is
lacking, and the more pain I endure, the less learnin' gets done.

I think I'll have to stay where I am, and just gather nuggets when I can. I
know I was depending
too much on a dictionary definition as you pointed out long ago, but I'm still
stuck with those.

... I'll TTYL, Ardith. James
