They all three busted, and no, I didn't resolder them, I just replaced all
of them. The wire broke off too close to the cap...

JH> and IF the chipset is Intel 440BX,

Looks like 3-4 of the chips on there are marked "PCISET" along with Intel,
whatever that tells us.

RJT> and I have at least 3-4 others as well.

JH> Woohoo! And you are waiting to test them out real soon - - -??

I was just checking out that Dell box yesterday and want to see what's in those
other two I just got, the HP and the Compaq.

JH> You got PII cpu's for 'em?

Actually a couple of the ATX boards are Socket 7, had P200s in 'em when I got
'em, except for one that doesn't have any CPU in it. I get this stuff sorted
out and I'll know better what I have and what I need. I sure do seem to have a
bunch of Socket 7 boards, too, and wouldn't mind finding some faster chips
for those. The local junk place had a K6-500 that I might go for, when I get
back to having some money again, ferinstance.

JH> I have a boxful of PII-350's, if any of yours will support 100FSB
 JH> processors.

That Dell had a 333 in it. Dunno what it supports offhand.

JH> Otherwise, they would run at only 233 due to the locked clock
 JH> multiplier.

Hmm.

RJT> I dunno, I'll have to look. That board with the caps has a CPU with
RJT> it, riveted heatsink with fan on one end, long part number with no
 RJT> speed apparent- 80523PY3350512PE SL2U3 - I'm guessing that's a 350.

JH> Sounds like I sent you one from that boxfull - That's it. PII 350
 JH> with 512 cache.

Yeah, I did get that one from you, come to think of it.

JH> Slowest of the PII chips with 100 FSB, but good for testing, due
JH> to the _low_ cost to me and thee.

RJT> Got one other board here with a 450. Also a couple of Socket 7 boards
RJT> in ATX, probably 3 or so of them, with I think P200s in 'em.

JH> Unless you check those Socket 7 boards out and find you have boards
JH> or faster chips than 200 which can work in them, (maybe at least in
JH> the 400 range), I think not much need to save them. IMO a good ATX
JH> case and PS can be of good value for upgrading - -

If I get some extra cases maybe I'll use 'em, and if I can find some faster
chips that'd be nice...

RJT> The Dell I just got a hold of not long ago I finally got around
RJT> to firing up last night and it has a P-II 333 in it. I haven't
RJT> looked at the Compaq and HP yet.

JH> That 333 was a real 'cadillac' in its day, being the fastest PII
JH> which some of the early 66MHz PII boards would support. It was
JH> based on 0.25 micron mask, had lower core voltage than the earlier
JH> models, and used less power than even the original PII-233 (23.7W
JH> vs 34.8W). BIR last one of those I bought was about $18, and I
JH> passed it along to my friend at cost for him to upgrade a system
JH> which he had passed on to his uncle or some other relative. I
 JH> haven't shopped lately - I guess PII-333 are now going for $5 or
JH> less, for sure. (I'd guess for less).

RJT> Looks like the Celeron box I'm currently using with linux *may* perform
RJT> better if I stuck that 450 in there, but I need to see how the board
RJT> the 450 is currently in compares with the one the Celeron is currently
RJT> sitting in, which is limited to 384MB of ram by design. Lots of stuff
 RJT> to figure out here...

JH> Are the 450 and the Celeron the Same package? A PII450 should be
JH> Slot 1. Celeron 433 and slower were available for Slot 1, and
JH> Celeron 300 up to 433 were also available for Socket 370. Celeron
JH> 466 up to 1.4GHz were only available for Socket 370. Even where in
JH> the same package, not all mainboards would support all speeds.

Yeah, same package, and I know that board supports a P-II, I remember looking
that up on intel's site. I don't understand why it only supports up to 384MB
of ram, though.
