Yes- for DIR, using either /p or |W have pretty much identical results.
DIR having the additional advantage of being included in command.com.

Yes, and also for deleting or REM'ing out all the unnecessary BS that
Winders puts on the EBD diskettes it makes.  It is also good for trying
to figger out what all goes on in *.inf driver files and the like, just
remembering it is best not to change anything in those unless for _good_
reason.  For those, using TYPE with |more is safer.

Hee.  I remember back when getting started, DOS, MSWORKS, Win3.x, Lotus,
WordPerfect, etc. all came with HUGE (and rather intimidating) manuals.
Nowadays the manual and/or helpfiles are on the CD disc, and about all
we get is a little quickstart pamphlet thingie, rattling around inside a
large mostly empty box, with sensor adhered, both measures intended to
discourage shoplifting.

But I often miss those big manuals.  Mousing around the helpfiles to
try and find info can be a chore, and often hard to find the answer
being sought.   (YMMV)
