Ärende: New Voyages "In Harm's Wa
=================================

I just downloaded and watched the second episode DVD of the fan
produced series, "Star Trek: The New Voyages". Spoiler space below,
but I just want to say, "Wow! What a great episode!" I admire the
group who did this in taking on such an ambitious script. They've got
Doomsday Machines (yes, more than one), the Guardian of Forever,
Commodore Matt Decker (same actor), Captain Pike, and a whole bunch of
other stuff that's just amazing considering this was done by a group
of fans. I strongly encourage any fan of the original series to get
your hands on "Come What May" first, then watch this new one, "In
Harm's Way". =20

And now, spoiler space.....

There are so many things I enjoyed while watching this. Highlights:
1. Seeing William Windom playing Matt Decker again.
2. Seeing Captain Pike commanding the Enterprise again, even if played
by a different actor. (They used the same effect as in "The Cage" when
zooming into the bridge. Nice touch.) I also like how they redressed
the bridge to match what it looked like in the original pilot. The
quality is in the details, nice work!
3. The shuttlecraft hidden in the garage. LOL!
4. Seeing and hearing the Guardian of Forever again, both the original
and the newly discovered HUGE one. Way cool. They nailed the
Guardian's voice, and the slow-mo fade effect as the characters jumped
through the gate. Well done!
5. Seeing Barbara Luna again, the actress who played the evil Kirk's
wife in "Mirror, Mirror". It's awesome that some of the original
series guest actors are being sought out, and are agreeing to appear
in these episodes.
6. Enjoying a GOOD story, much better than the first one.

Some things that bugged me, but they are nit-picky. Minor, when taken
into context that this is not a professionally done feature.

1. Some of the ships movements look a bit *too* quick, though I have
to admit seeing that Klingon D7 Battlecruiser do a snap-roll in the
heat of battle was pretty cool.
2. The Doomsday Machines looked kind of odd in the way they were
articulated. The original was a rigid form, but the producers of this
series decided to make it hinged in several locations. The only
problem is it makes them look very CGI obvious.
3. Spock was standing in front of the huge Guardian when the Farragut
flew through at hypersonic velocity. (The sonic booms were a nice
touch). He should have been blown away by the massive wall of air
that would have hit him as the ship flew by. Still, it was cool to
watch.
4. The acting still leaves something to be desired, but it was better
this time around. Especially James Cawley. He seemed much more
comfortable, and comes across more natural than before. He no longer
appeared to be doing Shatner doing Kirk, but was more fitting into his
version of Kirk. Which is good. Jeffrey Quinn still has a long way
to go with Spock, but doing Spock has to be one of the most
challenging things I can think of an actor attempting, and this guy
isn't even a real actor. John Kelly as McCoy is about the same as
last time. Okay, but nothing to write home about. He still comes
across as overly stiff at times. The actors playing secondary
characters, though having less screen time, were also much better this
time out. Charles Root as Scotty did well, and Ron Boyd as DeSalle
was very good. Even Uhura and Rand were more believable, once you
accept the different actors.

Overall, a very enjoyable viewing experience. They've gotten better
from episode 1 to episode 2. I hope they make a third one, and
continue improving. You can download the latest episode in low-res
WMV format from www.newvoyages.com. I grabbed the DVD version from
the alt.binaries.startrek newsgroup and it is much higher quality.
