I think thwy might've been trying to hook people who might not other wise
"just another Star Trek series," but realistically... I don't think it made
that much of a difference and mostly seemed like they were trying to trying
to be something they weren't.

I"ve said it before, but... I actually like "Faith of the Heart" and the
montage that accompanies it. Such a thing wouldn't work for any of the
other series, but on this show -- where we see many elements of transition
(Trip's movie night, mentions of the 20th century the way we'd talk about a
more recent century) -- the pop song and montage makes it "feel" closer than
the farther future of TNG or even TOS.

Unfortunately,
> "different" didn't mean "good."

Clearly, there were moments when they achieved some of the sense of wonder
of exploration, but oftentimes that got lost in what seemed like a tright
and over-used plotline. For example, "Strange New World" showed the crew on
their first real away mission to a new alien planet and seeing Archer bask
in this early mission captured a certain sense of wonder. But then the plot
devolved when a virus made Reed and company paranoid, forcing a more in
control T'Pol to take control. Of course, when everything clicked, as in
"Shuttlepod One" and the idea of how vast space seemed at this point in time
or "Dear Doctor" with Archer being confronted with th idea of
non-interference, we got a really great episode.

Oh, I agree a rest -- and that's Paramount is advertising this as, not an
"end" (not that trusting a studio executive is always a great idea...) -- is
needed, but still, it would've been nice to see ENTERPRISE complete a seven
year run.

But why would a "reboot" make any difference to those things? The
characters would be named Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, they would travel the
galaxy on the Federation starship Enterprise, encounters with Klingons and
Romulans would still be in the offing, and their tools would include
phasers, tricorders, etc. And, yes, the idea of a hopeful future and a
humanist philosophy that tackles topical issues would certainly be a part of
it. However, the '60s flavor -- in sets, SFX, and storytelling -- would be
gone. The Enterprise would look like the 1701 (no bloody A, B, C, D, or E)
that we know, but the FX would allow for things like saucer separation and
the moves seen in the fan produced "In Harm's Way." The interiors could
enhance upon more recent developments in technology that make some of the
TOS tech look obsolete while making it look futuristic for today's tastes.
And if the actors didn't look exactly like Shatner or Nimoy, it really
wouldn't matter -- different universe, slightly different genetics. More
importantly, while some stories could be remade with a more modern flavor
(like, say, a "City on the Edge of Forever" where Edith Keeler is a '60s
activist), more continuing storylines and even some unexpected surprises
(Chekov as a Klingon spy, perhaps?) built in. The cultures and even looks
of Vulcans, Klingons, et al could be tweaked without worrying about what was
established in "Amok Time," "Sarek," or "Kir'Shara."

I'm not saying that it is my favorite idea, but I think if it was handled
right, it would grow on me.

That sounds an awful lot like ROBOCOP. :-)

Seriously, just as Trek managed to comment on overpopulation, the arms race,
etc. in TOS, there is nothing stopping the Enterprise crew from encountering
planet like that...

Kevin
