Ärende: THE DEAD ZONE "Tipping Po
=================================

Althoguh "Tipping Point" (Part I) is technically -- at least from USA's
perspective -- a season finale, it isn't the produced season finale, as Part
II was actually meant to cap off the season, but USA has decided to hold off
on showing it. I have kind of mixed feelings about this. It did make for
a nice cliffhanger and, whether or not USA gives the okay for 4th season (it
looks very likely), we are guarenteed to not be left hanging. Still, it
would've been nice to see how this played out now...

We're immediately thrust into the Armegeddon plotline as John again has a
sudden vision of Christopher Wey, who informs him of Purdy's deception with
Mike Kennedy's suicide note. Like many of these visions of Wey, however,
it causes John much pain and he passes out. I would've rather seen more
build-up to this over the season, as we've only seen him visit the doctor a
few times, as in "Collision," or popping some pills in episodes like
"Shadows." The doctors present John with a classic solution: they can cure
him of his headaches that could kill him, but he could also lose his
visions.

We finally get to find out what Purdy did back in "Finding Rachel, Part 2,"
as Johnny finally takes him to task over the vision we saw him get from the
suicide note (though John still doesn't say exactly what he saw). I kind of
find it hard to believe that he doesn't care at all about the money matters
that Purdy has gotten him involved in -- for someone who doesn't seem to
have a job, John's either being very brave or very niave. In any case, we
get a nice scene with a stunned Purdy admiting to forging Kennedy's suicide
note. Given Purdy's quick confession and his desire to be punished, the
only downside seems to be that I can't see Purdy playing a significant role
into a possible fourth season.

John finally delves into Kennedy's death, finding out that Congressman
Stillson lacky Sonny pulled the trigger. I'm not sure exactly why Stillson
would arrange such a crime (especially without working with Purdy), unless K
ennedy was planning on turning against Stillson's blackmail and going to the
authorities. I just doesn't seem something Stillson could benefit from at
this point.

John also gets some additional insights into Rachel's death from the
"Finding Rachel" storyline as well, seeing the killer interogate Rachel. We
still don't find out exactly who killed Rachel, but it is implied it's
Stillson, as John gets a vision again of the voting machines. Personally, I
hope it isn't Stillson, as that seems much too obvious.

Rebecca uses her hypnosis to help while taking scans of Johnny's brain and
ultimately gives him the suggestion that he will only see her preparing a
surprise party if he ever gets a vision of her future. This leads to a
nicely surreal, if rather obvious, vision of Rebecca buying a cake that's
really a gun ("Have you ever bought a cake before?" says the baker).

We get more visions of the future, as Wey is apparently being held prisoner
by someone in the future and we get to see a young man, who I correctly
guessed is J.J. Eventually, we even get to see that John has survived into
this future and is the one holding Wey hostage (presumably since Wey
disappearing during "Finding Rachel"). Future Johnny, who bears the scars,
whitened hair, and vacant eyes of being present while Washington was
destroyed, tells Current Johnny not to interfere with what Rebecca is going
to do and John finally sees Rebecca assassinating Stillson, only to be cut
down herself by government agents. Of course, these visions are too much
for John and he once again collapses.

There are many nice moments here -- Purdy's TV confession, John talking to
Sarah about not letting him remain for years in a coma again, etc. -- but
like most of these stories, the big payoff will be when all these things
come together. Will the result of the murder mystery be worth the suspense
or will it seem like much ado about something we already knew if Stillson is
revealed to be behind Rachel's death? Will we get answers about the
Armegeddon plotline if Stillson is taken down (either by Rebecca or
legally)? It seems to me that the future John saw could be as much from the
result of some reaction he had to Stillson as much as whatever Stillson
does. Certainly, the sinister magazine cover implies that Johnny did
something at some point that led up to the future he sees (maybe stopping
Rebecca?). If things are as simple as Rebecca killing Stillson preventing
that future, it would be somewhat a parallel to John doing the same thing in
the movie and novel, yet allow the show to continue on from there.

In any case, and it might still be little early as we haven't seen the
production side of the season finale (the aforementioned "Tipping Point,
Part II"), I think from what we've seen of season three of THE DEAD ZONE,
it's been a pretty good ride. We've had some very good episodes ("The Cold
Hard Truth," "Looking Glass," "Speak Now," "Cycle of Violence," and
"Shadows") as well as some nice development in some of the relationships
(especially John's relationship with Walt, who found his way into a lot of
the episodes this year). The only downside to this season is that I don't
think there's been enough build-up and follow-through with some of the
issues with Purdy and Johnny's medical problems from week-to-week. Overall,
I'd say this season was better than last and maybe even a tick better than
the first season.

Kevin
