Hello George -

GV>>> This Technueq was Very popular 25 years ago, before IDE
GV>>> Hard drives were invented, back then MFM Drives and 5.25"
GV>>> 10 lbs Hard drives were very good at Generating lots of
GV>>> Heat Hot enough to melt the Sodder Connections on the HD
GV>>> Circuit board, and Freezing the HD Stableized the Sodder
GV>>> long enough to Boot up the HD and salvage some of Data..

CA>> No. This was an attempt to break 'stiction' of the heads
CA>> from the platters. It had nothing to do with solder.

GV> I'm Sorry to disagree with you on this one.. Stiction was
GV> an intirely different problem.

Yes stiction wasn't melted solder. The possibility that a hard
drive would heat up enough to melt solder is laughable and
anyone who has ever soldered knows that solder solidifies almost
immediately once you remove the soldering tip.

GV> IMHO, Freezing a HD with Stiction would not work well
GV> because Freezing the HD would solidify the Lubricant that
GV> caused the Stiction problem in the first place.

I monitored the HARD DRIVE echo here on FIDO for many years and
stiction was the ONLY reason anyone put a hard drive in their
refrigerator - it didn't always work.

GV> I fought Stiction problems also..

GV> Early SEAGATE HD were manufactured with a poor quality
GV> Lubricant that leaked out onto the Platters and Read/Write
GV> heads when it heated up, and would Gell when cooled off
GV> when the Computer was shut down or went into Hibernation.

GV> The Gelled Lubricat would Stick the platters together,

Sticking the platters together using drive lubricant NEVER
happened, it is a physical impossibility.

GV> or even more damaging, the Gelled Lube would Stick the
GV> Read/Write Heads to the Platter and Booting the computer or
GV> trying to access the HD with Stiction could dammage Some
GV> DATA on the Plater where the Read/Write Head was stuck.. On
GV> some Early HD you had to Park the Read/Write Head before
GV> shuting down the computer to keep the Read/Write Head from
GV> laying on the Platter over some Data area..

Prior to the use of voice coils to autopark the heads ALL hard
drives were required to be 'parked' prior to shutdown.

GV> The ONLY two Practical solutions to Stiction was:

GV> 1.) Leave the Computer ON 24/7 as most BBS Sysops were
GV> prone to do, or

GV> 2.) Replace the HD with a different Brand HD

This is not unlike "The Linux Guru Fix" to reformat and reinstall
when there are problems with the OS. :-)

GV> Seagate HD in the Late 1970's and early 1980's seemed to be
GV> the primary HD with Stiction..

Wasn't only Seagate's problem, there were others as well. That
Seagate was more popular and probably outnumbered the others in
desktop PCs _may_ have had something to do with the impression
you have. I used a Seagate RLL drive for over 15 years until
the bearings finally wore out. Try that with some 'other' drives
and see what happens. ;-)

This is all just history now and I'm not willing to prolong the
'lesson'. I tire of the endless misinformation and nonsense.
