OK.  Now you can concentrate on which drivers are colliding.  First, you 
need to determine if your machine is XP ACPI compatible.  How to check?  
Open Device Manager, and click on the small plus sign next to 
"Computer".  What does it say?  If it says "Standard PC", your machine 
is not ACPI compatible.  If it says "ACPI Machine....." then it is.

Non ACPI machines DO NOT share IRQs, while ACPI compatible machines do.  
If your machine turns out to be non ACPI, what you need to do next is 
check the resources that each driver is using and see if there are any 
conflicts.  The pausing could be caused by an IRQ conflict.  On a non 
ACPI machine, IRQs can be changed within limits.

If your machine is ACPI compatible, you CAN NOT change IRQs or 
resources.  The system will not allow it even if there is a conflict.  
The only way is to swap out hardware or go into your CMOS setup and 
change the IRQ that is assigned to the device by the BIOS.  That may or 
may not work.

You mentioned you had a PCI video card.  Does your machine motherboard 
support AGP video?

What you can try is setting up another hardware profile with the 
priority set to high and use that profile whenever you play the game.  
I'm not sure that will even work.  Anyway, all you're doing is putting a 
band aid on the wound.  You need to get at the root of the problem and 
fix it.
