 I gather that design must be gaining popularity among newer machines,
 although I've managed to pretty much avoid it.  It's risky IMO, as it
 assumes that drive failure is a low probability, and that the user will
 will have a backup from which to restore in that eventuality.  Far too
 many won't, and could end up having to buy a copy of XP, etc.

 The backup is indispensable, of course, and you're right that the
 bootable XP disks give the user a variety of options otherwise
 unavailable.  Again though, is the reality that there are far too
 many who are not utilizing any of these tools.  I've been somewhat
 surprised to find that many college students, most of whom have
 been exposed to computers in their educational curriculum for
 some time, seem to fit this "toaster mentality" profile.
