Thanks for the (late) suggestion, but I threw caution to the wind.

To make a long story short, I wiped out (deleted) the two Wfw directories
on C:\ drive, changed the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat so that the command
processor was Command.com, rebooted the system and ran the Wfw SETUP for a
new install.

I was able to locate a version of QEMM97 (Memory Manager) on the Web and I
think that when I installed it, QEMM made some very serious changes to both
my Wfw systems.  I am NOT going to run QEMM again, while Windows is on the
hard drive -- I'll archive it first.

I had been wanting to try DesqView X Server (which I found on the same Web
site), but I think I'll wait until I can set up a dedicated box.
