Interesting the various schemes used by different camera
manufacturers... at my school, I have 4 HP digital cameras (all the same
model)-- each creates a pair of folders, one of which is a DCIM folder.
Within that, is a single folder (I forget the name-- HPsomething)...
inside that, it makes the JPG images, each with a unique number.

Nicely, since I often end up sending a bunch of kids off with the
cameras and I want to copy the images to a single folder, each camera
seems to give its images names with different numbers, so I don't get
file overwrite issues bunching them together. There seems to be no limit
to the number of photos that can be stored in that single folder-- at
least we haven't reached a limit with the 64 MB memory cards we've got.

My Olympus (SP500-UZ) creates a single DCIM folder, with a single folder
named 100Olymp inside with the image files in it. (I don't think it
creates additional folders as more images get taken, and it certainly
doesn't create additional folders for images taken on different dates).

My wife's Canon (PowerShot A510) creates a DCIM folder and a MISC
folder... currently there's nothing in the MISC folder; in the DCIM
folder, there's a 106CANON and 107CANON and CANONMSC folder... inside
the first two are images, inside the latter there are files names
106.CTG, 107.CTG and D.CTG (each a couple of kb in size).

I can't see a pattern why images appear in one or the other of the two
folders that currently contain photos.
