Most email clients "compress" the various folders but it's not the type 
of compression you're thinking about.  As the messages are read and 
deleted, dead space occurs within the file (I never found out why).  If 
you delete a message in the middle of the Inbox, say, not all of the 
space utilized by that message is freed up.  Compressing the folders 
removes that dead space which can easily account for many megabytes of 
disk space.  I've had users run out of disk space and was able to 
reclaim a significant part by simply compressing the mail folders.

What OSes are on the various computers?  The Windows 9x series had 
problems seeing other machines occasionally when using only TCP/IP.  The 
quick "fix" (ok, workaround) is to load NETBEUI on all computers as a 
secondary protocol.  You should still be able to connect by IP address 
(\\192.168.0.100\<share>) but it can be cumbersome.  If that's not the 
problem, perhaps the software firewall on the one machine isn't in the 
"trusted" zone, that is, the subnet is not allowed access.
