Running a BBS "Bulrtin Board System", is a Hobby,
much like Golf, Fishing, Race Cars, Airplanes,
RVing, or Collecting antiques.. :-)

It all depends on how involved you get..

The Software needed to run a BBS was Usually Windows.

I ran a BBS for over 18 years,
and way back in the late 1970's
, way before the Internet or Public Access to
Satelite downlinks, when Fidonet Zone 1,
USA/Canada got started, in order to sart a BBS,
a Sysop had to Search all over the Country,
Long Distance on different BBS's to find all
the Program and mail Utilities to run a BBS..

and if you did not live in a Big Metropilitan
area, then Bringing in the Fidonet Mail Topics
and Files was an expensive Hobby Cost to
provide service to all your Callers/Users..
My average Phone Bill each month was
$400.00 to $800.00 per month for five or six years
until I Planet Connect in Newport News, on the east coast
started a 19,200 Baud Satelite Downlink service, for
a one time $700.00 investment in a 36" Satelelite
receiver dish, LNB Receiver and Decoder Box that
linked up to a serial port on my computer and a
$35.00 Monthly Fee, made bringing in the FidoNet
Mail and files Very cheap for several years,

until The InterNet, became available and ilimiated
the Satelite Fee and most Long distance phone calls..

I never charged my Users/callers a Dime for Access to my BBS.
it was my Hobby, and i enjoyed it for many years,
and was Happy Spending Money on my Hobby,
Whether I had Users or Not..
