That's correct. I couldn't figure out any way to monitor a new program's
installation without having Total Uninstall set up previously. :-))

The way I use it is to activate Total Uninstall, Browse for the drive /
folder of the program I wish to install and when I've located it, I "open"
that file. Now, you have the option to change the Application Name to
something that is more descriptive -- changing the Application Name has no
bearing on how the application is installed; it's just an aid to assist you
in determining what application is being installed.

Next, I do a "pre install snapshot". This step creates an index of the
folders, files, registered "handles", etc., that is currently on the
system (probably necessary in order to create the Restore Point). This can
take some time, depending on how many programs you have installed on your
system...

When that step is completed, you are presented with "Launch the setup
application now", and you click on the Next button which runs the setup.

After the application is installed, I normally launch the application to
run any configuration / options, because the application will likely
generate more folders, move files around and make other setting changes.

When I am sure that the application is fully installed and configured
correctly, then I finalize the Total Uninstall procedure. This creates
another snapshot of the system which indexes all the changes that were made
by the application's installation and configuration.

When I want to uninstall that application, I use the Windows Add/Remove
Programs applet _*AND*_ afterwards, I run Total Uninstall to completely
remove all traces of that particular application. I've gotten into the
habit of using the Add/Remove Programs applet first because there were a
couple of occasions where I ran Total Uninstall first and I saw that the
application was still being listed within the Add/Remove applet and I
couldn't remove them (I would have to reinstall).

Total Uninstall is NOT perfect, but it is certainly superior than the
Windows Add/Remove Programs applet. Total Uninstall will get rid of *most*
of the stuff that Add/Remove doesn't touch and for the most part, I don't
bother with Regedit to seek out anything that Total Uninstall may have
missed -- usually those pieces are insignificant and have little or no
effect on the system operation.

I'm not sure of what free program from PC Mag you may be referring to... I
did find:

I'm running Total Uninstall 3 on Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000 Pro and
Windows 98SE and I heartily endorse it. <vBg>

And, as a sidenote, since Symantec has acquired Quarterdeck's CLEANSWEEP, I
wouldn't even consider the Symantec option...

           Cheers ... Gerald

... OK, I'm wierd! But, I'm saving up to become eccentric.
