Ubuntu/etc IS different from most other Linux distributions in the way
it deals with root access... Note that it can be set up for
automatically log-in.

As I've said, I've had different access to my Windows partitions on
different installs-- and don't know why. And as you mention, my memories
of using the Ubuntu Live CD are also of not being able to access the
Windows files-- for that, I would agree that something like Knoppix is a
better choice.
