Novell is trying to position SLED as a replacement for Vista/XP with
relatively stiff hardware requirements-- though not as much as for the
newer Microsoft OS's. I'm not able to comment on minimum hardware
required for Linux XGL - the graphics technology used by Novell (and
other Linux distros) for OS 3D and other eye candy... since I've never
been able to get it up and running on any of the systems I've tried.

Novell lists relatively low-level minimum system and recommanded system
requirements for SLED: minimum of 256 MB RAM, 800 MB hard drive space
(ha!), 800x600 display, Pentium III-500, recommended: Pentium 4 2.5 GHz
or equivalent AMD, 512 MB RAM, 2.5 GB drive space, 1024x768 display. I
couldn't find anyplace where Novell clearly spells out requirements for
its optional XGL, though they note that you need to be able to register
the product in order to download the optional (commercial) ATI or nVidia
display drivers needed in order to enable XGL. (Yes, you can probably
download those drivers directly from ATI or nVidia and install them
yourself).

While Google may be my friend (thanks, Jeff!) a search for "XGL minimum
requirements" was not immediately forthcoming... an OSNews.com
discussion had someone claim that it should work on "any video card with
decent OpenGL accelerator support" (which means?) Yahoo Answers posted a
"Best Answer- Chosen by Voters" to a question clearly asking "What are
Xgl for Linux minimum sys requirements"... the 'best answer' said "There
are plenty of Linux distros that will work on older, low spec
hardware"... which didn't answer the question at all! Makes me wonder
who 'voted' on their answer-- Aha! It was the only answer posted, and
got a total of 1 vote as 'best'.

I don't have any background with OBERON, but I not that the Mac OS X
manages all the 3D and transparency eye-candy that Microsoft has tried
to build into VISTA's Aero Glass interface with 1/4 the video RAM
requirement-- 32 MB vs 128 MB... I have the current version of OS X
installed on a 2000-era Mac laptop with 16 MB of video RAM, and I've
turned off window shadows, which improves performance at the expense of
a barely-noticeable bit of OS fluff.

VISTA Beta 2 seems to require at least 128 MB of video RAM in order to
mimic what OS X can do with 32 MB... and during Beta 2, when some
programs opened up, VISTA automatically turned off the Aero Glass
effects, dropping down to a less graphically demanding display... I
haven't noticed that happening with VISTA RC1 so hopefully they've got
it working better.
