We use DVD shrink for some things like making backup copies of our
commercial music videos.  Without that capability we would quickly
wear out the originals.

I ran into the same problem but instead of selling off the lenses, I
gave them away to someone who couldn't afford to buy them.

When purchasing for myself I too would rather buy the better and more
expensive item that will last rather than one which has to be replaced
in a year or two.  However, operating with limited funds (church) and
depending on the generosity of our members, it's much more difficult
to justify an item which will cost twice that of another.
