Computers come with an array of communications options ... 
you should choose one that makes sense. I suggest the network 
(ethernet) connection because it's very common (every machine 
has a network connection or should) and it's almost as fast
as a USB 2.0 or 1394 (FireWire.) The cable you need 
("crossover") is inexpensive - $5 for 14 feet - or maybe free.
Frys sells "Airlink 101" brand 10/100 MHz network card for $1.

A few years ago, I would encounter computers without ethernet
but with USB 1.0 or 1.2 and I got a special USB cable 
(its got a blob of plastic in the middle.) I got it from
a swap meet dealer ($20) but Lap-Link sells it too ($60).

The "parallel-link" cable (another version of Lap-Link)
is available at the 99 cent store (RCA brand!)
This is as fast as USB 1.0 and maybe as fast as USB 1.1. 

The "null-modem" cable connects serial ports. DB-9s, DB25s
and combos.

You can also connect telephone modems directly with ordinary
telephone cables - RJ-11 type stuff.

Windows provides all the software you need for any 
of this (the USB thing needs a "driver.")
That includes DCC, terminal software and networking stuff.
