Sounds like DNS is not working for some reason.  Do an "ipconfig /all" 
and post the result here.  Of interest is the DNS server address(es).

In the meantime, try this experiment:

- ping 192.168.0.1 (or whatever your router address is)

- ping 69.44.177.228

- ping ftp.adaptec.com

The last two lines are equivalent and I happen to know that they respond 
to pings (not every site does to help keep down denial of service 
attacks).  If the first one works but not the second or third, the 
problem is likely in the router - power cycle it.  If the first two work 
but not the third, it's a name resolution problem.  A "nslookup 
ftp.adaptec.com" command should verify this as not being able to be 
resolved.

All the cable modems that I know of (and, I'm sure the external, non-USB 
DSL modems, too) have only 10Mb Ethernet ports.  No reason to spend an 
extra penny when the cable/DSL download speed is less than that. 
If/when download speeds are faster than 10Mb/sec it will be time for an 
updated modem.  Usually the World Wide Wait gets in the way also so it's 
really a moot point for years to come.
