The 'official' Mac OpenOffice has not yet been re-written to take
advantage of the Mac's graphical interface (Aqua)... as a result, it
requires pre-installation of X-Window support, and when up and running
is very un-Mac-like and doesn't make use of standard Mac OS components
and services. OO.org stopped working on an Aqua port a couple of years
ago, and only re-started that project relatively recently; last estimate
was to expect a release version sometime in 2008.

There IS, however, NeoOffice- an OO.org derivative for the Mac created
by a small group with no official connection to the OO.org project; it's
pretty good... sort of half-way between being a native Mac application
and a Linux or Windows version and is always a version or two behind the
main OO.org development.

It's certainly usable, though compared to a typical native Mac
application, still has a bit of awkwardness. Free though!
