Note that his tests were presumably using his WiFi-deficient Powerbook... using
a different laptop with a more efficient antenna, someone could receive his
signals further away.

Some years ago, I attended a 3-Com press conference held outside at Kits Beach
in Vancouver-- they had set up a table with a standard laptop on it, with a
small add-on antenna attached to the PCMCIA WiFi card. Off in the distance, we
could see a high-rise tower; in the tower, there was a standard WiFi router--
also attached to a small add-on antenna; there was clear line of sight between
the two, with a distance of about a KM (0.6 mile for those US-readers).

The laptop on the beach was able to get a strong signal from the router on the
tower at that distance with fairly modest antenna improvements. (3-Com was
actually demoing WiFi enabled VoIP phones).
