Well, the home user usually doesn't have "anything more than a couple of
machines using peer-to-peer", as I said above (I'd tend to disagree with
"several machines" that you say - I have 3 here and that's probably more than
the usual home user).  In any event, there's a pecking order for MS Networking
browse masters - W95 is the lowest and XP would be the highest, if no server
OS exists on the network (not sure if XP gets a higher numeric ranking than NT
or W2K).  Any time a computer comes up on the network, an election is forced
to determine who the browse master is (by default, each machine thinks it's
God only to be told it's not after the election).  The built-in ranking helps
assure that a more sophisticated OS gets to handle the job.  This may help
explain why W9x networks have more problems than ones with at least one server
and/or NT-class OS machine attached.  It would help if the browse master would
always be on but that's not always practical.

I haven't seen any browsing problems with any NT-class OS, only with
W9x-series machines/networks.  If I had my druthers, I'd rather have any
NT-class machine always on to provide for proper networking, peer-to-peer or
client/server.  A Samba server identifies itself as an MS server so it will
take over the duties if nothing else is present but most home networks won't
have this.  If all machines are at least NT, I'd expect *no* problems.  If
thatere's at least one W9x machine, I wouldn't be surprised to see the
occasional problem with it...
