Ärende: not getting ata/100
===========================
Hello August,

Responding to a post in the WIN95 area:
    On Thursday February 10 2005 at 16:33,
August Abolins [1:229/390] wrote to Gerald Miller,
    about: not getting ata/100

AA> So.... How did the W2K boot-up go?

It went very well considering. It's totally operational but I suspect that
I'll be doing a "Round 3" -- I attempted to install the 'freeware' version
of Roxio's GoBack3 software and then installed two other HDDs that had
previous Goback.bin files on them. That gave GoBack a bad case of
confusion and uncertainty -- I had to uninstall GoBack and now I can't get
GoBack out of the Registry to do the reinstall. It's almost as if that
paricular part of the Registry is "write protected". I get an error
message from RegEdit: "cannot delete GoBack; Error while deleting key."

GM>> I do know that I have to update my NIC, video, sound, and USB2
GM>> drivers because of all the yellow question marks.

 AA> Outch.

That was to be expected because no OS install CD is prepared for all the
hardware variations that are possible. Within twenty minutes of seeing all
the yellow question marks, everything was working. Still have a couple of
peculiarities -- ATIpoll on startup and some weird memory location problem
on shutdown (but that message flashes by so fast that I've never been able
to see the text of the message). I'm hoping that Round 3 will cure these.

GM>> But, most everyone is telling me it is better than W98 and the
 GM>> many BSoD.

AA> It will be interesting to hear about your experience with W2K!

Since W2K is built on the NT platform, it would be unfair to try to compare
it to any Win9.x product! I was hoping this OS was going to be Server
class, but alas, no. I went to the M$ web site to see if I could purchase
Windows 2000 Server, but it has been superseded by Server 2003. My other
option would be to try eBay...

At this moment, my 'unqualified' opinion would be: "If you can get your
hands on Windows 2000 Pro and if you feel the need for speed, then,
upgrade." If I had been content with all the BSoD and other problems I had
encountered with W98SE, I may have stuck with it, but the hardware
'demanded' something with more pizazz... :B-))

           Cheers ... Gerald
