Gmail also supports IMAP.  While different from POP, it works 
essentially the same and provides the same feature set as the webmail 
interface.  That is, it allows you to access your email from any machine 
while keeping the mail all on the Gmail server for ready access as well 
as still providing the same junk mail filtering as well as any that the 
email client provides.  You can set up additional folders via IMAP so 
your message sorting is accomplished with nothing necessarily being 
removed from the server (that's your choice as to when things are removed).

The one fly in the ointment is that the email client has to support IMAP 
but I suspect virtually any current application does.
