I'm not planning on taking that one apart-- replacing the non-functioning
trackpad on my Mac Powerbook was enough of a challenge for me-- about 38 tiny
screws of different sizes... when I was done, somehow I was one screw short.
(Keep the snide comments to yourself!) But it worked-- using a relatively cheap
replacement part from eBay.

For the Dell, I replaced XP with Ubuntu, and will try it up at Sechelt,
replacing the (also Ubuntu-powered HP P3-800 laptop that's currently there)...
if the remaining USB port is reliable enough to let the printer work, I can get
by with the rest, plugging an Ethernet cable in, and adding a PS/2 port mouse.

Joey replaced it with a $600 2nd-hand laptop he got from someone on
Craigslist-- he was pleased with himself, but I thought he would have been
better off getting something new in the same price range.

His money, his decision.
