Ärende: IEXPLORER problem
=========================
Hello CHARLES,

Responding to a post in the WIN95 area:
    On Sunday March 20 2005 at 18:47,
CHARLES ANGELICH [1:123/140] wrote to GERALD MILLER,
    about: IEXPLORER problem

GM>>>> The repair / recovery aspect was the major reason why I chose _not_
GM>>>> to use any NTFS. I was informed that NTFS was not without its

CA>>> I should mention here that W2K and XP use NTFSv5 which is not the
CA>>> same as the older NT version of NTFS.

GM>> Then it shouldn't be a problem for me. Number one, I don't have any
 GM>> older versions of NT

CA> I mentioned that fact because there is software 'out there' written
CA> for NTFS that _may_ not play nice with NTFSv5. That a program is
CA> reputed to work for 'NT' does not automatically mean it should be used
 CA> on a W2K or XP machine.

Now, this makes more sense. Please forgive me for being so 'persnickety'
in my previous message.

GM>> and number two, I don't anticipate switching to NTFS.

CA> You might change your mind. NTFS does seem faster than FAT32 (I have
CA> both here on this machine) and it fragments more slowly and defrags
CA> faster. Not a big deal but that tells me it's a more 'orderly' file
CA> system than FAT32 is. I could be wrong, just an educated guess really.

I'll see what happens when I start shaking everything up again. No
promises.

 CA> --8<--cut

CA>>> I haven't tried to setup networking on this W2K machine yet so am
CA>>> not familiar with what is installed and what is optional.

GM>> I will have another opportunity to find out (read on).

GM>>>> Aside from the slightly annoying printer problem, I get sporadic
GM>>>> 'Access denied' messages when attempting to connect to a
GM>>>> drive/directory on either machine. This is one annoyance that I
GM>>>> really want to fix! Any suggestions?

CA>>> Sounds like what Alan was describing before he added NetBEUI to the
 CA>>> 'mix'. :-)

GM>> If your system doesn't trash my e-mail to you (you will find that the
GM>> e-mail address for addison.kimmel has been replaced by
GM>> gerald.miller), you'll note that the current W2K system is 'dead in
 GM>> the water'.

CA> Yes. I just read your email earlier today.

Just when everything was starting to impress me. Now, "That Don't Impress
Me Much!" (with apologies to Shania Twain)

GM>> I'm not sure (yet), but I think some malware got onto my system and
GM>> attempted to link with an 'unknown' network. Zonealarm Pro caught the
GM>> attempt and I put that network into the Internet zone by denying
GM>> access to that network. I ran IPCONFIG /ALL and found that the local
GM>> IP address had changed from 192.168.xx.xxx to 169.254.xx.xx _and_
GM>> then things went from bad to worse -- keyboard lockup, web browser
GM>> wouldn't work, mail client wouldn't work, ZAP client wouldn't
GM>> load..... I've disconnected the network cable from the router and
GM>> taken W2K offline until I can thoroughly investigate these problems.

CA> My thoughts are that when changing your workgroup names you
CA> inadvertently enabled DHCP or something along those lines that
CA> attempted to add your ISP to your 'network neighborhood' bypassing ZA?
CA> How this happened I do not know but that's my first guess. :-)

My understanding is that (with a cable network) DHCP is enabled when you
see the screen (prior to Logon) that says "Searching for Network..." and
I'm unaware that I was supposed to disable DHCP _before_ changing the
workgroup name. Can't see how changing the workgroup name would make DHCP
want to add my ISP to my network neighborhood -- it would have to go
through two firewalls to do that -- ZA (software firewall) and router
(hardware firewall) and the ISP is on the Internet side of everything --
locked out.

GM>> I will purchase another HDD (I don't want to rework the existing HD
GM>> because I hope to recover some data) and redo the Win2K install. This
GM>> time, I will keep a detailed written account of the install and the
 GM>> other processes.

GM>> And, my employer has seen fit to change my work schedule, AGAIN, so
GM>> this may take longer to fix! :-((

CA> If it makes you feel any better, I have trashed my W2K partition 15
CA> times over the past 2 years or so while changing configurations and
CA> tweaking or adding/removing third party software. It happens and
CA> BootitNG has saved my bacon all 15 times. :-)

THAT is supposed to make me feel better? I gotta go change my socks. :)

It's too early for fly fishing and it's too cold for sky diving and the
grand kids are much too young to appreciate these computers... I guess
I'll have to fix the machine, as best I can, even if I don't have BING!

           Cheers ... Gerald
