I pretty much had the lab set up the way I liked - and the systems were had
Deep Freeze installed, which meant that kids (or teachers!) couldn't mess with
the setup, accidentally or on purpose.

The biggest issues:

-- poor bandwidth - many local schools have fibre-optic connections to 
the school; mine is not one of them. We've been told we have one of the poorest
Internet connection speeds in the school district. Imagine 50 systems sharing
the equivalent of one home cable-modem connection: not bad if only one or two
systems are online at once, but try to get a class-worth of users watching
on-line video!

-- a network server 'meltdown' in late May... after years of managing my 
own network, the school district took over last October, installing a fancy
server, with multiple RAID drives, backups to a server downtown, storing shared
software, the school website, all saved student and teacher documents,
databases with student progress on various educational programs, etc.

Late May, the server's RAID controller failed - making the multiple copies of
everything unreadable. No problem - except they then discovered that the
backups to the remote server had failed in December, with no one noticing.

A fine way to end my teaching career - explaining to kids and teachers that all
their documents (including drafts of final report cards) were lost. Big
increase in use of USB memory sticks after that!
