==============

        Hello Charles !

CS> Normally, I don't do much with the Toshiba as far as burning CDs is
CS> concerned. But yes, I'm still using the Sonic software since it seems
 CS> to work well enough.

Well, my trouble all started when trying to burn these
recovery CDs. Sonic barffed on the 3rd one. And matters got worse as
I tried to rectify the situation.

CS> My Toshiba has no hidden recovery partition as it came with a set of
 CS> recovery CDs.

The IBM speel is all about doing away witht these CDs, all is
onboard. And all was working fine when I redid the OS until Avast
let a bug through. In the mean time, I had munged that external USB
HD that held the copy of Restore.

CS> The first CD inserted will bring up a menu asking if
CS> you wish to recover software or the entire hard drive. If XP Home on
CS> my Toshiba were to die because of a software problem, all that's
CS> needed is my True Image boot CD and external Maxtor USB HDD.

Same thinking here with the IBM setup except that all is in
that hidden partition. It works, I used it once. Just let me get my
hands on a Restore SW with the Canadian fluff and all will be fine.

CS> Usually that won't work correctly because the system checks the
CS> hardware. A restore partition whether it's on an IBM or a Compaq,
CS> requires the restore to be initiated from the internal HDD. IOW, it
CS> probably won't work from an external HDD. That's why I use True Image
CS> instead - never a need to run the Toshiba restore.

The IBM RestoreULtra will work from the internal hidden
partition, from the same Partition on a USB external HD or from the
CDs that also has all the same data but on 7 CDs. That is why I had
gone to the 40g HD. If you find a minute or 30, go to the IBM site
and read the .doc on this procedure, called Image Maker.

CS> Some systems (HP and Compaq) allow you to make a set of recovery CDs
CS> using the burner and a utility. After making the CDs, you can blow
CS> away the hidden restore partition and use the entire HDD. Of course
CS> any system restore now has to be accomplished from CD.

The IBM restore will rebuild this hidden partition. The
thinking is that if away from home, you have all that would be
required to save the day without crying on an an Administrator's
  shoulder to save your system.

CS> As I said, copying the restore partition to an external HDD may not
CS> work correctly. It seems that's what happened with your IBM.

It did work. The BIOS here has a facility to answer for a call
to Restore even if Windows is dead. There is a button here labeled
Access IBM and holding it while booting will bring up the facility
to redo the system. Many choices are presented, copy saved files or
a redo amongst many. I did access this to copy that Hidden
partition to a USB device. I did not know anything about it but when
it presented that option, I used it. The USB has to be connected
before the boot to be recognized. Logical this is.

All in all, Charles, I am sure that this is a fine option, if
only I had not munged it, I would be on the OEM OS by now. I can not
blame the system at all. Now, I know better and will be more careful
next time. I have here the 7 CDs for a US redo but it will not work
with AOL v 9.0 for unknown reasons, IBM nor AOL were able to shed
any light on this, so far. The Canadian IBM rep. says that my file
  is still open.

On DUN now for the next few days. Leaving around the 15th.

        Have a fine week.

I would not be without an OLMR.
