Improper shutdowns can skew any operating system that keeps bookoo files open,
be it Windows, OS/2 or Linux, NTFS may be more forgiving as a file system, but
improper shutdowns be them intentional or by power flickers, arent good.

I suggest you invest as little as $40 or more in a uninteruptable power
supply(UPS).

Your favorite consumer electronics store will sell them, they come in various
shapes and sizes, with runtimes ranging from 5 minutes to 110 minutes or more.

A UPS has a lead acid battery that will power a AC power inverter to provide
power to equipment connected to it for the rated runtime in the event of a
power failure.

The more you pay for one will mean more runtime.

The cheaper ones generally allow you to run relatively undisturbed during the
power flickers, so how much more than that you want depends on your wallet?

UPS, afford you the same and better protection that surge protectors do, except
that a UPS can also get you through a brownout. If a surge or brownout occurs,
the utility current is locked out and you are switched over to batteries until
current in the lines normalizes.

Most UPS's have the ability to shut the system down at a preset time into the
runtime or when the battery only has minutes left, this requires running
special software and having a serial or USB cable running to the computer from
the UPS.

Dont rely on the UPS to be your power surrogate in a prolonged power outage,
their whole premise for a home user is to allow you to save your data and
gracefully shut the system down and to bridge power flickers which are in short
duration. Also I recommend only powering monitor, CPU and perhaps minimal
network equipment. Do not use UPS to power other home appliances and do not use
a UPS to cold start the system if its already off and utility power is not
restored.. Some UPS's can but its not recommended as a practice..

Brand names to look for:

APC
Belkin
Tripplite

Look in the various Office Supply Stores (Office Depot, Office Max, Staples),
Best Buy, Circuit City, Compusa, Fry's, Radio shack, SAMS and/or Walmart.

You will probably find a more comprehensive selection in the Office Supply
chains or Compusa or Fry's.
