Yes the IP-Cop system which does duty as Internet gateway/firewall and DHCP 
server, does DNS caching

My feeling is that the problems are DNS related, and I suspect that DNS 
updates lag somewhere along the route.

Yes, that can be done, just that I don't now what is required to do so for 
IP-Cop which I use for my Internet server/gateway/firewall

Yeah, I know what Freesco does, IP-Cop is similar, but uses a current 2.4.* 
kernel, and implements iptables and not ipchains, and uses a heap more hdd 
space than Freesco, but then it does a lot more as well.
