===================
ML> That makes sense - I didn't have it badly until I banished
ML> milk products from my diet for a short period. Unfortunately
ML> the condition didn't improve when I added them back again.
GJ> Any reason for cutting out milk completely? At what age?

Well, I had enough of a reaction to milk that the idea
of ingesting it didn't particularly please me, except in
the form of ice cream products and Stroganoff, which I
liked and which I was greatly encouraged by those in the
know to consume for strength (I was 5'8", an inch less
than now - my maximum, around age 30, was 5'9.75" during
a period of very strenuous hiking - and weighed 130 lb),
so it fell by the wayside in late adolescence. I really
didn't miss it much, but then the call of cream sauces
and frozen desserts brought me back to the fold. Oh,
yes, and blintzes.

=

GJ> If, as you originally stated, the missile came from behind the Mazda,
ML> I didn't say that at all. I described the direction of the
ML> scratches as going from about 160o to about 340o but was
GJ> That is a direction from rear to front. Perhaps you meant 340 to 160?

It takes me great pleasure to do something that I seldom
have the opportunity for doing, accuse an engineer of
arguing from theory at the expense of observation.

This is what I saw: The scratches, not parallel, but in
series, originated from 160 and went to 340. That's physical
evidence, the heck with your theories. There was a dent! at
160 followed by the larger diminishing scratch going toward
340, followed by an empty space indicative of bouncing,
followed by a smaller and still diminishing scratch going
in almost the same direction (but very slightly altered
probably by the elasticity of the hood and - something I'd
forgotten about - maybe spin of some kind).

There were two impacts, both toward the front of the hood,
then nothing, indicating to me a skittering off onto the
road. Correct me if I'm wrong, but were the origin the
direction you describe, there would have had to be more
impact marks going to and perhaps through the windshield.
Yet the half of the hood closer to the windshield, and
the windshield itself, and its protectee, are intact.

These are the evidences that led me to discount the
possibility of the origin being in front of the car,
unless the projectile vaporized between the front third
and the middle third of the hood.

GJ> Vaguely possible, but the scratch could not have started from the
GJ> rear; it would still have started from the front, as the horizontal
GJ> speed of the car relative to the road at the moment of impact would
GJ> have been greater than that of the stone. As the direction of the
GJ> scratch must have been from left to right, the stone could not have
 GJ> come from the right.

The direction of the scratch was from right to left, rear to
front. Examination (as above) makes it clear.

GJ> A perception that it came from above at a very steep angle implies
GJ> that it had a horizontal velocity component more or less in the same
GJ> direction as the car was travelling, but of lower value. This is
GJ> exactly what one would expect if the stone had been thrown from a
GJ> truck or other vehicle travelling in the same direction.

I understand this not at all. Could it not in fact have come
from above at a very steep angle?

ML> Here's the location of the scratches.
GJ> This is the first mention that there were 2 separate scratches.

That is what happens when you don't read posts not to you!

GJ> One characteristic which disproves that theory is that the scratches
GJ> are angled relative to the car axis. This would indicate a
GJ> significant lateral velocity, which would preclude further impact with
GJ> the car. The fact that the 2 scratches are parallel and close
GJ> together indicate that they would have been caused by two objects
GJ> flying in very close formation (unlikely) or by one dumbell shaped
 GJ> object.

Don't see 20 degrees off axis as affecting the result. I
think you still have in your mind a preconceived event
that I believe impossible. Are you sure you weren't an
economist?
