Fit for consumption and nontoxic are two different things.
A burger from the 99 is fit for human consumption. A burger
from Wendy's is (arguably) nontoxic. It is true that our
systems have evolved to be a bit more finicky than Chookie's
or Zim's. It's even true that a very few things are deadly
for us but edible for other species: e.g., rabbits can eat
Amanita mushrooms without getting horribly exercised.

Slugs, well, they're disgusting and slimy and ugly and
harbor parasites; still, I think it possible they might
be made edible.

I was wondering if making them into a Manhattan-style chowder
might have rendered them less poisonous.

Cordial Cherries
cat: candy
yield: 30

10 oz jar maraschino cherries with stems
8 oz semisweet chocolate, chopped

Drain maraschino cherries and return to jar. Pour brandy
in jar. Cover with a lid and freeze 8 hr. Drain cherries
and pat dry, reserving brandy for another use.

Melt two-thirds of chocolate in a saucepan over medium heat,
stirring until a candy thermometer reaches 115F. Remove
from heat, add remaining chocolate and stir until candy
thermometer reaches 89F and chocolate is smooth.

Dip cherries quickly into melted chocolate, coating well.
Place cherries on wax paper, stem sides up and cool.
