Ärende: Proms
=============
Hi Dave,

DD> RH>What a memory of prom! Can you go out elsewhere for supper before
 DD> or RH>are you stuck?

DD> When I was in high school I happened to go to "THE" high school (of 3
DD> public high schools). Many of the parents were of the country club
DD> set, very few were considered "blue collar" and it was considered a
 DD> "rich
DD> student body". Most senior classes put on a prom featuring a major
DD> touring band, at one of the (three) prominent hotel's ballroom. They
DD> did this by industriously holding fund raisers, etc. from the time
 DD> they were freshmen.

Nice! I went to a central school--most families were farmers or such
like but some white collar workers in the bunch. Our prom was in the gym
but I didn't go--not asked and since my mom was getting her Master's
degree that week end, my parents thought it would be a good time for me
to check out the college I'd applied to in the same area. Probably
didn't miss much by skipping prom. Our fund raising was done for a trip
to Washington, DC in spring of our senior year; I did go on that.

DD> Time comes for my class to make plans for our Prom and the school
DD> administration decrees that the Prom must be held first week of May,
DD> at the school's old jock-strap smelly gym, and must use a local band
 DD> for
DD> the music. The class president (who was, overall, a snobbish ass) got

And probably equally poor food or did guys take their dates out to
dinner beforehand?

DD> wind that the assistant principal had hatched this deal so that the
DD> class would not blow the treasury on prom and the school's activity
DD> fund would reap the leftover $$$.

DD> So, the class officers hired a local four piece garage band ($50 for a
DD> four hour gig to give you an idea of their quality - even in 1960)
DD> spent about $22.50 on red and black crepe paper streamers and another
 DD> three
DD> bucks on Scotch tape to hold up the streamers. Then donated the rest
DD> of the treasury to St. Jude's Children's Hospital which was then in
 DD> construction.

Sounds about like what our school did for proms; I think the bands were
a bit more expensive but it was still local hire for the most part.

DD> Then a consortium of the higher income parents got together and
DD> sponsored a visit from the Ralph Martierie Orchestra at the St.
DD> Nicholas Hotel Ballroom - On June 10. The Friday AFTER graduation.

DD> The "official" prom had more faculty chaperones in attendance than
DD> students. The after school was out "invitational" event was very well
DD> attended, indeed. And the school administration could only grind their
DD> molars and be hot under the collar.

Of course! The administration had no control over the kids at that
point.

DD> The were really hot under the collar when some of the graduated class
DD> who were not attending the "invite" went up the school's smokestack
DD> and painted "THE LAST LAUGH" in _BIG_ letters that could be seen far

I presume you were in this crowd?

DD> wide. These were sandblasted away before classes resumed in September.

DD> 1961's Prom was pretty much a repeat of 1960 ... including painting
DD> the chimney with "LAUGH AGAIN". This stayed on the stack until it was
 DD> torn
 DD> down. Bv)=

The administration knew it was a lost cause if it had been done for 2
years.

DD> Title: Mrs. Tooler Doolus' Oven Spaghetti
 DD> Categories: Pasta, Sauces
 DD> Yield: 6 servings

DD> FROM: White Trash Cooking II; Ernest M. Mickler; 10 Speed Press

I've been having fun reading these; they remind me of a cook book our
daughter Rachel was given by one of her co teachers the year she taught
school in GA. Title was Trailer Park Cooking or something on that line
but the recipes were similar to what you're posting. Some of them looked
pretty decent; others were in more for laughs.

Catch you later,
Ruth
