Huh? The email system still works the same (POP is a very old standard, as is
SMTP, even IMAP isn't terribly new). It hasn't barely changed at all.
Telnet's not changed, nor has FTP. The only thing that's "changed" is the
addition of the HTTP protocol. The OSI Model hasn't changed at all (you DO
know what that is, I assume, since you've been using computers since before I
was born according to what you've written).

Now a lot of things have improved, yes, such as the invention of Ethernet,
better hardware, faster computers. But the software, especially the
underpinnings of the internet, have been terribly slow to change. Did you know
that we're quickly running out of IPs? On the current system we're on, it's
only a few short years before we run out. There's IPv6, which would give us
nearly unlimited IPs to use, but people are resisting the change and not
wanting to update the software they use to handle the new addressing protocol
(sounds familiar, huh?).

The only real thing that's changed is the window dressing. Underneath, it's
all still the same old thing. Even Tim Berners-Lee, the man who invented the
WWW and the HTTP protocol, says that the Web is very outdated now and if he
could do it all again, he would have added more features to allow for future
expansion of the protocol without a major rewrite.

DS> Show me where I said that, or stop putting words in my mouth, okay?

I never said you said that and if you assumed I did, I'm sorry. I said "using
that logic", that's all-I drew up the assumption. I was simply following a
logical thought for me.

DS> And while you're at it, show me the computer today that can read

You caught me there. I didn't say that there WAS change, Dave-I was speaking
about the internet and Fido, not necessarily your own computers.

DS> Oh, and by the way, your computers work fine today tis true. But I

DOS still lives very nicely. :)

Come 2038, the world's going to have a heck of a time because on 1/1/2038, the
signed 32-bit integer that *NIX uses to hold the "epoch number" is going to
roll over and suddenly everything that runs *NIX that hasn't been updated is
more than likely going to croak, unless a lot of things get fixed. But people
are short-sighted, like the Y2K problem, and won't fix anything until the very
last minute.

The hardware may not last forever, but properly written software sure could.

DS> supported. Second of all, I'm not talking about a mailing list.

You were talking about one as an "alternative".

DS> The fact is there are always going to be those who hang on to old

Yes, but that time is a long time off yet. FTN has survived 25 years and it
doesn't show any signs of stopping. Synchronet, which is still being
developed, now uses an unsigned 32-bit integer for its "epoch number" counter.
The software I use, Maximus, can be easily modified to do so also. Same with
Squish.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for other software.

We've been holding on to Fidonet for a long time now...and probably will. In
fact, it'll probably still be around for the rest of your lifetime and probably
mine too (I don't know how old you are, but I assume you're at least as old as
my dad and he's 58). I don't think we really need to worry about that.

I'm not completely disagreeing with you, Dave. I'm simply saying that you're
putting two feet in the grave when it's still only time for one!

And now that it's almost time for work...meaning the midnight hour is striking
soon...
