ML> i'm not "worried" about it... i'm just pointing out that
ML> the future is here, now and there's no need to start looking
ML> for a way to transitioning to what's available...

DS> And yet, no matter how hard anyone tries to hold it back, technology
DS> advances, things get obsolete, and old things stop being compatible
 DS> and stop working.

DS> When - and it IS when, no matter what you or anyone else wants to
DS> believe - Fido crashes, every echo dies unless it evolves. Having
DS> echo distribution creak along on "private networks" or through
DS> kludges might keep a couple of old regulars happy and messaging, but
DS> it will do nothing at all to bring in new blood, and sooner or later
 DS> everything is gone.

ML> yeah, i keep seeing that but (that's that one again ;) ) i know
ML> too many who still use those things on a daily basis... they're
ML> not dead and gone... far from it, really ;)

DS> How many new albums have been released on vinyl lately? A few, yeah,
DS> but hardly any. How many movies come out on VHS these days? Squat.
DS> How many brand-new 8-track tapes have been released in the past year?
DS> How many offices still use typewriters? One or two for typing
DS> carbons (another old and obsolete technology except for a few
DS> specialized apps.) The REAL point is that clinging to old tech =
 DS> doom.

All that you say is true, but in all those quoted cases a change has
been made only because the more modern technology has distinct
advantages over the old. Where this is not so, the old remains
triumphant. For example, apart from development of derailieur (sp?)
gears, little has changed in the design of bicycles over the last 100+
years. And what about the layout of the keyboard you are using? Would
you find it easier to use a touch pad for everyday word processing?
In spite of gas turbines and other great inventions to convert fossil
fuels into movement, the engine of you car still uses the complicated
suck-squeeze-bang-blow principle that Otto came up with so long ago.

So, I agree that we will probably change over from the FIDO network
eventually, but only when the alternative shows distinct advantages.
For me, operating through a local dial-up BBS and using Bleuwave, I
find that is the best. Eventually I will probably move to a faster
connection than my present dial-up for Internet connection, even though
that will cost me more than my present $10 or so a month, and then the
situation will probably change.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Old-Fashioned Fried Okra
 Categories: Vegetables, Inedible, Snot pods
      Yield: 6 Servings

      1 qt Okra (4 cups)
    1/2 c All-purpose flour
    1/2 c Cornmeal
    1/2 ts Salt
    1/8 ts Pepper
      1 Egg; well beaten
      1 c Shortening

Wash okra well and drain. Cut off tip and stem ends. Cut in 1/2-inch
pieces, and set aside in medium bowl.

In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, cornmeal, salt and
pepper. Pour the beaten egg over the okra, and toss until okra is
coated. Pour flour mixture over okra, and toss to coat.

Heat shortening in a large skillet over medium heat (oil should be
hot, but not smoking hot). Add okra and fry until brown and crisp.
  Drain well on paper towels.

  Makes about 6 servings.

Note: Remember, the larger the okra pod, the tougher it will be, so
  choose small pods.
