We had some bad experiences in Sasebo with that brand so they stopped carrying

We also had a problem with the yeast they shipped at the same time.  It didnt
work right (dead I guess).  I no longer see any of their products here.  Too
bad as they are a good brand.  I imagine someone at their shipping office just
did something wrong (possibly got fired but who knows) and they lost the
market here.  I am told, the same shipment was also for Okinawa (Kadena AFB
and others there) as well as the marine Camp Zama.  We all had the same bad
experience since it was the same shipment load.

In Sasebo, they pulled it off the shelves as soon as it was discovered and we
were limited to 1 bag a week of the only remaining flour they had in stock (5
lb bag, white, forgot the brand but probably pillsbery). Honor system to not
get more than 1 a week but the checkout wouldnt let you get more than 1 on a
trip and it was well marked.  I recall we ran out before the next load came
in, by about a week?  It was about 3 years ago.  I know they got their money
back from the company but we still had to wait for another shipment in Sasebo.
 Bigger places like Okinawa probably never saw a shortage as they have enough
'pull' to get something in fast.

It was before Elise got here and before we knew the stores in Fukuoka to get
quality flours that she found.  It was when my friend was still doing the
Tonoo Bakery stuff so we didnt suffer and we pointed people to her place if
they ran out.  We didnt actually run out here at our house as I had 2 bags in
the freezer so hadnt gotten any of the Hodgson's stuff.  I just made that
last.  I had forgotten all about it until you mentioned the brand name here.

Like anything, you can get a bad batch.  Overall, I have been quite impressed
with Hodgson's quality.  Especially their wheat flours and rye.  For Rye
especially, it was my preferred brand stateside.  I've also had really good
luck with their yeast.  I seem to recall they also have a sour-dough starter
packet that I liked but I could be mistaken on the brand there.  I just recall
the packet was brown and you added 'skin temp water' to it then set it on the
counter out of the way for a day.  While Don liked the bread, he didnt like
the smell of the starter so we didnt do that again.
