Ärende: Re: Beans Beans Beans
=============================
Hello Dale,

>LL>I wonder if I can break a rule and get away with it...

DS>Well you didn't break any of the rules you mentioned -- mainly
DS>due to the fact that in most things we allow a certain amount of
DS>interpretation.

Of course. Food is always a matter of taste, with many varying
opinions as to whether something is good or bad.

>DS>5. NO religion, theology, doctrine or biblical references are to be
>DS> discussed or debated. No political debates will be tolerated. No
>DS> racial, ethnic or religious slurs will be tolerated.

>LL>I think I can safely get away with breaking the rule on "No religion"
>LL>since food is a religion. And also the rule on "No political
>LL>debates", as food and politics go hand in hand. Let's give it a try -

DS>I don't see any debates or politics -- just mention of political
DS>figures:-}} Religion as pertains to dietary things does come in
DS>from time to time -- but is not subject to argument or debate.

Shew! For a minute there I thought I wuz in big trouble...

>LL>General Eisenhower's Baked Beans
>LL>John F. Kennedy's Baked Beans
>LL>House Bean Soup
>LL>Senate Bean Soup
>LL>Senate Bean Soup (1872)

DS>But you did trip over a rule you did not mention, namely:

DS>3. The number of recipes per message must be limited to one, or two
DS> very short recipes. As a rule of thumb, if two recipes exceed 100
DS> lines in message length, it would be better to post them in two
DS> messages.

But...but...but...I can explain!

DS>I sometimes don't call people on it, but we do ask folks to abide by
DS>that rule, and everybody does.

I had to give equal time, otherwise a major flame war would have
broken out. The only way to do that was to post several beans recipes,
thus making everybody happy.

It all started in 1872 when beans were first served in the Senate
Restaurant. That did not sit well with House members, who never ate
at the Senate Restaurant, being that House members and Senate members
never got along.

The House Bean Soup recipe originated on a hot summer day in 1904
when Joseph G. (Uncle Joe) Cannon, Speaker of the House, strolled
into the House Restaurant and ordered bean soup. When the cook told
Uncle Joe there was no bean soup, he got mad and said, "Thunderation!
I had my mouth set for bean soup. From now on, hot or cold, rain,
snow or shine, I want it on the menu every single day!" And so it
was, and remains today.

However, posting the House Bean Soup recipe caused a problem for
the Senate. As such, I had to give equal time, hence the Senate Bean
Soup recipe. You see, in 1907, Senator Knute Nelson of Minnesota
ordered bean soup only to find there was no bean soup. Of course,
he had gone to the Senate Restaurant rather than the House Restaurant.
As chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, the very irate Senator
ordered bean soup appear on the Senate menu every day. And so it
was, and remains today.

Naturally, I had to include beans recipes by former presidents,
being that presidents and congressmen were always at odds in some
kind of a power struggle or ego trip. As such, I posted one recipe
by a conservative, and one recipe by a liberal.

I mean, it was all about equal time. Had I only included one
version or the other, a major flame war would have broken out.
And with 535 members of Congress joining the fray, as well as
two former presidents and one current president, you know what
kind of food fight that would have been.

I would have included bean recipes from the judicial branch, but
none could be found. Apparently all former justices, as well as all
nine current justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, have figured out
where all that hot air comes from, and chose to eat stuff that does
not give them gas.

>LL>I'll post Mitt Romney's bean soup recipe next time.
>LL>And Hillary Clinton's brownies recipe (if I can find it).

DS>By all means, do so. Just don't talk about their politics here.

Mitt Romney's bean soup is the favorite of all the Romneys, apparently
developed/created by a Romney -

1 1/2 cup dry Navy Beans
6 cups cold water
1 cup onions, chopped
4 ounces slat pork or ham, cubed
1/2 clove garlic, chopped
2 cups celery, chopped
1 cup carrots, diced
2 whole cloves
2 bay leaves
4 cups beef or chicken stock
dash of pepper
3 or 4 tbsp cider vinegar

Cover beans with water and soak overnight.
Pour off and measure water, adding enough to make 6 cups.
Add beans.
Sauté onions, salt pork or ham and garlic until onions
are transparent.
Combine all ingredients except vinegar in heavy pot.
Cover and simmer about 4 hours or until beans are soft.
Add vinegar.
Salt and more pepper may be added to taste.
8 to 12 servings.
